Good morning, Sup Forums!

Good morning, Sup Forums!

What's everyone been reading recently? I just started on Tao Te Ching, but I'd like to hear what everyone else is reading right now. Thanks!

Hey! =D

I am reading metro 2033 and all the books from jules verne.

Ooo, haven't read science fiction in a bit! Are you enjoying it?

Mein Kampf

I'm a few chapters into john kasich's new book. i'm probably not finishing it, it's just a bunch of his "not running for president" drivel.

Tom Clancy Red Rabbit

Ah, when I read that I had a bit of a hard time staying awake! There are a few interesting parts, but in general, It didn't really have anything to grip me into it. It all seemed like ramblings relating to the time period that I couldn't get invested in, as I wasn't alive in the circumstances it was portraying.

Haven't read that. I'll probably steer clear of it if it's just the same spiel we've all heard before.

Fun! I haven't heard much about it. How are you liking it?

Oh yes, cant let them go!

I've been slowly reading The Art of War by Sun Tzu with commentary by several generals after him. It's some obtuse shit. I understand it, but Sun Tzu says some Taoist shit like "The best general wins without fighting" and then 5 more generals proceed with a Philosophical dick-measuring contest trying to sound the deepest. It's infuriating. Still some useful ideas in it though.

Fun times! Good to know you're enjoying them!

I've only read The Art of War without commentary, but yeah, that sounds pretty annoying. Trying to over complicate everything Sun Tzu says kind of defeats the purpose. I liked how concise it was, very easy to come back to.

read The Alchemist
read it when i was 12 and re read it last year, really stuck with me. quick read too, maybe a hour or two

If you like Science Fiction, I HIGHLY recommend Michael Crichton. He's my favorite author. Prey and Sphere were my favorites. If you like corporate espionage and the like, Airframe is pretty good. Timeline is good, but just a TAD overrated.

what translation/edition?

An introductory book to Kierkeegard philosophy. Just starting it, but it sounds like this guy tried to be what every hipster try to be these days, but he was actually intelligent and had something worth a shit.

Just finished Orx and Crake. Fantastic. Best book I've read in a long time. HBO is turning it into a mini-series, but it obviously won't be as good as the book.

Starting The Handmaid's Tale tomorrow.

What you reading OP?

I believe it's this'n. It's at least the same translation.

Well it came out 2002 so it's pretty old but damn is it good. Spy vs Spy kinda stuff. It's an entire series now and I've read most of them.

I'll be sure to pick it up some time! Thanks for the suggestion!
I'll check him out! Science fiction isn't my favorite genre, but I can appreciate it from time to time.
Ooo, fun! What're some of the idea's he had?
Just barely finished up 'The miracle life of Edgar Mint' and 'The populist explosion.' Moving on to a bit of philosophy so that my friends don't have my head, aha!

Sorry if reaction time is a bit slow, my brother just woke up and is quite upset with me.

Reading Real Analysis by Terry Tao

believing what you read makes you inteligent/interesting. grow up

Right. Because he said that. Found the weak reading comprehension.

its implied you utter mongaloid

Yikes. Feel a bit sorry for you there.
Sorry if it came across that way. I just wanted to see what Sup Forums's been reading. Nice to get some suggestions and chat with other anons!

You were looking for mongoloid. Wouldn't you be more comfortable in a YLYL or Dick Rate thread?

If I get it right, he believed institutionalized religion is wrong because it turns religion into a series of void rituals, pure form with no meaning. Is our personal and individual duty to find our way to God. Paraphrasing one of his books: "Is ironic people are better Christians when they try the hardest to not be Christians, and even better than self-declared believers". Also, he believed the philosophy of his time was too focused on ideals and abstract thinking, ignoring the immediate reality of a human being. That is, Kierkegaard was born after Kant and Hegel published their works, and all the categorical and thesis - antithesis and synthesis mumbo jumbo was nice and everything, but it was too abstract and difficult to ground into everybody lives, too much talking about how our minds work, but few words about why we have a brain, and ultimately, what's the purpose of living.

So the book is about how to religion correctly? No thanks.

Marquis de Sade. One of my favourite authors ever, and I'm surprised more Sup Forumstards aren't into him.

If he was alive today, he would have loved Sup Forums.

Some of the translations of his work have been toned down a lot, but look for Dr Paul Gillette's translation.

Also his short stories are pretty funny too.

Examples:

>Dude sees hot lesbian chick
>boner.jpg
>dammit she's a dyke
>becomes trap
>seduces her
>profit

or how about one called 'the self made cuckold'

>dude helps other dude cheat on his wife
>masks are worn
>dude doesn't actually know they're having threesome with his wife
>accidently cucked himself lol.

There's 120 Days of Sodom too, which isn't so much a novel than the literary equivalent of a gore thread.

Seriously check him out if you haven't, you won't be disappointed.

Unless you get the Penguin classics editions. They're still good though.

Sounds like a riot, user. I'll have to give him a read.

Sounds interesting! I belonged to the LDS church for a bit, and It's rather hard to find meaning and connection to a god in such a cult like environment, so I understand. Seems like an interesting read! I'd definitely enjoy it if he's one to ask the big questions instead of trivial and unimportant inquires.

Oh dear, he must be fun at parties! I'll check him out, if only for his short stories. =)

Alright, I've enjoyed this thread, but I have to do some chores and have a few friends over later. Thanks for sharing, anons!

Not quite.

As I said, this book is just an introductory review of his work. It don't attempt to say why or how to religion, just what and why Kierkegaard believed in. Is a subtle difference, but is still a difference, just like explaining how to behead a person (cut in here, then there), and justifying it (Allahu akbar!) are not the same.

Now, on a personal note, yeah, I do think is hard to feel connected to God if we don't understand what or who He is, and is even harder when you have to go through a series of routines that nobody took their time to explain (and which bores you to death), and therefore any book designed to teach proper religion sounds unattractive. Still, is worth to read his ideas, because sometimes there's something important to heard or learn.

He was apparently. Once he threw a big dinner party, and at the end handed out chocolates laced with Spanish fly. It widens the blood vessels similar to viagra, but also causes irritation of the urethra. Imagine having a raging boner and the inside of your dick all irritated and itchy. Needless to say it turned into a huge violent orgy.
