Why is MURDER wrong?

Why is MURDER wrong?

It's only wrong if you kill a human being. So killing muslim ragheads is therefore not murder.

But why is it wrong?

because it's not sanctioned by the state, which has a monopoly on violence

How does that make it wrong?

Its a societal rule to protect the weaker among us from those of us who have the ability to kill another.

its taking the only thing away that a sentient being is guaranteed, and sending them into basically torture

there is no wrong, there is no right.

Because as an individual it's in my best interest to go along with a society that has convinced the masses not to kill me

It's not wrong. It's normal but laws and punishment makes you think it is a bad thing. If you could kill the person you hate without a punishment you'd do it. You don't kill because you don't have the cojones to do it because you know you will either die or be in prison all your life.

So it's just a societal rule? If you made a society where murder was allowed, it wouldn't be wrong?

How do you know that being dead is torture?
Also, why is torture wrong?

Because the purpose of morality is to enable social functioning. If we could just go around killing each other, society would collapse.

Per definition its not. A simple solar flare created by some ancient device could wipe out our solar system in 12 minutes, killing us all. And the being pressing the button could fly away and never be in this part of the universe again. Was it wrong to wipe us all out?

Ending one singular human existence is not wrong per se. Its the question why anyone should allowed to do so without getting killed yourself. So, the deterrent is society and keeping your own life. Also you don't want to drive around in an armored car and have a constant flight or fight situation. This gets old quickly. So its a social construct, that works well.

On a metaphysical/philosophical standpoint, to end someone else existence gives you power, which has implications. Like: who gave you this kind of power and the reasons you have to use it.The jury isn't out, but it seems that they hang you in the Wild West for murder, they expel you from the tribe for murder (which usually means death in the wild alone). So there is some sort of inane instinct in us to punish this misuse of power, but cheer if some asshole oversteps and had to be put down.

There's also the fact that psychopaths don't get an increased heart rate at the site of blood so it's partly genetic as well as societal probably

We as humans agreed upon to respect each others freedom. By murdering someone you rob someone of their life which is essentially all their free will.

"Ask not for who the bell tolls. It tolls for thee."
This quote is meant, along with the content which it resides within, is meant to portray the ideals of a unified human race. When a human dies, especially prematurely, it effects the potential capabilities of the whole species.
Since morals are meant as a means to preserve the positive qualities of society, an act that deteriorates and endangers the fabric of society, such as murder, must be considered morally wrong.

How do we know morality's purpose? How do we know it even exists?

If morality is just what someone, or society, considers bad, why can't I disagree?

What if I stop agreeing to respect your freedom?

There are two potential sources of morality.
Either there is a god, and all morality is based solely off of his rules. Should this be the case, morality is directly tied to one religion.

If there is no god, then morality is tied to humanity. It is subjective, but would be based on an authority who understands the human race as a whole.

Do you want to be killed?
Or a family member?
Or your dog?

Most people don't enjoy being killed.

>those of us

Oh man you must be strong.

If it's subjective, then is murder really wrong?
The 'wrongness' is not inherent to the thing.

I don't want to be killed, but why does that mean killing me would be wrong? Why is it wrong to go against my wishes?

Do you define self defense or preservation of one's own life murder, if you must kill someone in order to survive?

If you do, then yes, there are degrees. If you don't (as the law makes a distinction between the two), then no, because murder is a specific act, done with intent.

In a sense, the human race will always have a 'god' or an authority. To the secular, this authority is whomever has the most power or knowledge.

If you believe in chaos and similar forces, then you will be unable to believe that any one person could have any more authority than another, and thus morality is subjective.

If, however, you believe there are absolute truths, then morality itself is real. What is in question is whether or not we know what those morals are.

Why is MURDER capitalized?

You'll be seen as a scumbag and almost everywhere there are laws towards murdering someone. So you will be punished based on that.

Because it would be unnecessary, and leads to the suffering of one or many.

Suffering is seen as wrong, because it causes a lot of stress and other problems including but not limited to loss of limbs, or other body parts, and mental trauma.

Because we as a species have come to the consensus that dying is not enjoyable, and being alive is preferable (obviously not 100% agreement). You have probably already come to the conclusion that murder is wrong, when it's being done to you, because pain and nonexistence is not favorable. If it's true that murder is wrong when conducted for you, the same is true if you were to conduct it on someone else.

To put it simply, the golden rule and dying is not enjoyable.

Then the community will stop yours. So your view of the world or community will not survive, and such you can't give your "faulty" DNA to your kids.

You can defend yourself. So you can stop the act itself by harming the person who acts against your wishes. Order is either restored, or you die, and with you all this philosophical thinking.

The question is: why does it matter. Life is intensely complicated. You want survival, you need food, and clothing, and bathing in the sun.

People who spend time too much time about morale have an genetic disadvantage to those who simply follow the basic rules and are happy with it. They gain while the others who think stay stagnant, or even die out because of their actions or because the they wasted their lives finding answers where others failed for 2000 years and more.

The murder may be specific, but the wrongness isn't.

Why can't there be a mixture of subjective and objective truths? We tolerate subjectivity in a variety of areas already, without denying objective truths in others.

But I'm able to disagree without being wrong or foolish?

Why is it wrong to cause stress and other problems?

I already know that I don't want to be murdered, but I don't know why that makes murder wrong

Because it's theft of life.

it's not, just fucking rude

It isn't always wrong. In fact most people don't deserve to live, have nothing to offer, should be eliminated.
The idea that it is the wrong is because the humans were engineered as a slave race, and the overlords didn't want to lose profits.

It makes it wrong because other would come to the conclusion you will spend the rest of your life in a cell or get killed yourself.

So its not wrong if you search to kill and be judged for it, throwing away your life. If you are content with the results of your action and accept any punishment, than in your world view, you didn't do anything "wrong" per se, but still need to suffer lifetime in less then ideal place.

Your fixation on wrong is useless. We had like 100 genocides on the worlds, there were Nazi doctors who where protected by remaining Nazi sympathizers who keep mass murderers out of jail (and out of consequences). This happened many times on this world.

The real point is: none of them ever really defended the killing, they always defended the ideology behind it. Like Breivik did. Because even they knew, the murder itself has no excuse. They had no argument why its good, then it has to be "wrong" by default.

Because morality.

...

>Why is it wrong to cause stress and other problems?
Because it causes people and all living beings to lose their productivity. Plants don't grow, mammals grow cancers and overall lose health.

Healthy is the optimal setting for any living being. If you willingly and intentionally take health away, that is what is wrong.

>inb4 why is loss of productivity or health wrong

Jesus Christ kid. You can ask why forever no matter what people say or how satisfactory their answer may be.

Do you want to get murdered?

...

This and so much this.

A society deems what we call murder wrong because that's part of the political and social contract we have, which states we absolve all right to violence under our judgement in lieu of the state to commit the same acts we label as atrocities when commited by us, the citizen. This sacrificing of our liberties to give full control to our state which makes it wrong. Inherently, there is nothing wrong with murder. Evolutionary speaking though it tends to subvert natural law of evolution and natural deaths, which has consistently been seen as overall entirely destructive as a societal force rather than beneficial.

it is wrong because you are objectively the amount of happiness in the universe.

>why is loss of productivity or health wrong?
That seems like a reasonable question. Why are they inherent goods?
Are you saying it's just not in my self-interest?

It interferes with the autonomy of another human being.

In a broad sense there is no right or wrong, you're simply a biological machine made to breed and survive as long as possible, you could argue that killing all other males and hoarding resources for yourself is right because it accomplishes the biological meaning for your existence.

However as sentient humans with society and rules and empathy and emotions we are complex, but it's all superficial, it's made up. But that doesn't make it wrong, because nothing is wrong.

The most basic and most effective morality I can think of would be based on consent, as it covers pretty much all of your bases. Don't do anything to another person unless they want you to, simple.

>Somebody wants to be fucked
you may fuck them

>Somebody wants to die
you may kill them

You belong to the human race, even if we aren't special. you should always take pride and love your fellow man, because we are all the same, we are in this together, everybody is confused, depressed, hungry, cold, scared, we all feel the same and we all belong to the same group.
We are strong because we can work as a cell.
