Studying physics led me to hard determinism and I'm just not ok with that. I thought that understanding the world would give my life meaning but it did the opposite. What do?

Meaning is not required for happiness.

I like that notion but I literally committed years of my life to finding it and it was all for nothing.

Well now you know to stop looking for it. Many people waste their entire life trying to pursue happiness by seeking meaning.

How do i find happineas then?

Physics is a branch of science, it doesn't explain everything in life or it's meanings. Physics describes how things move and react in relation to one another, it doesn't tell you WHY they move that way. Read some philosophy or something, broaden your scope of information to other branches and decipher your own meaning from the different sources you've collected. It's a time old question that has been debated by man since the dawn of mankind, some kid that just read a few physics books isn't going to have all the answers at the snap of his fingers. But of course I understand that every young man has that compulsion to feel like he has mastered the world and understand everything

Do shit that makes you happy. I hear you like studying physics.

So physics has taught you that free will dosent exist and we are all merely reacting to the world around us? Just so we're on the same page.

You don't "find" happiness in other things, you find it within yourself. Believe it or not happiness is a choice, take it from me man, what you're looking for is out there. You just can't give up as soon as it starts getting difficult

Hard determinism is one of the possible conclusions that can be drawn from the collapse of local hidden variable theory.

Basically, when a particle is created, it already contains a 'code' governing it's interactions with other particles. Every particle already knows where it will go and what other particles it will encounter, so nothing is actually random.

So the code of a particle will have the chronological sequence of its entire existence already made?

I understand the "code" part and it's rule-like connotation.

Yeah, neuroscience has been finding that the way thoughts work is completely incongruous with the idea of free will as well, with more bodily systems than just the brain determining the conditions for a thought, which the brain then obeys and formalizes the thought to confirm to, making us essentially a puppet for our gut bacteria through hormones and the central nervous system, while your perception is that it's all just the miracle that is you having another brilliant precious completely thought reflective of your unique and beautiful personality. Or some such effect. It's been a couple years since I kept up with the research, so perhaps some aspie in the field who is bound to be on here can add to the discussion.

Yes but humans (so far) can't tell exactly when and where all particles will be and react at all times. While nothing May actually be random, our ability to precieve them is random, hence why I believe free will to be a human perspective

Your will is always determined by your circumstances and history, but isn't this the only way it can be your own will?

You have the power to be happy if that's really your goal, whining around just shows that you're making up excuses.

>Your will is always determined by your circumstances and history

wat?

fucking nonsense

I kinda figured that's what you were talking about.

Trust me, replace "finding meaning" with "gonna always try to do better". Your life (and sanity) will thank you.

>happineas

kek

Happineas and Herb

This shit took me 15 minutes. pay some respec

No one cares about your autism.

You can't do random shit because your actions are always the result of some process in your brain. Your brain furthermore processes input based on previous experiences and genetic predisposition, among other factors.

Ive not read much about it, myself but you might bw interested in emergence theory.

you're gay.

I liked it.

>projecting
No one cares, once again.

you're really gay. and one off trips. ur mum'll die if u respnod to this post.

This is very Sartre-y. He was a depressed nutjob. I read Being and Nothingness front to back. At 17 I thought he was crazy, at 26, I know he was just a mopey fuck.

peace be unto u, Sup Forumsrother.

Read some Dean Radin and Chris Carter's trilogy on psychic powers to understand the error of your ways and of what passes for science these days.
Now fuck off, I have to fap and your thread distracted me from all the porn threads.

Well a non-deterministic universe would just mean shit'd be random and unpredictable, so that's not much better either.

is this the power of autism

I always stop reading at

Faggot

>It already contains a 'code' governing it's interactions with other particles
Yes
>Every particle already knows where it will go and what other particles it will encounter, so nothing is actually random
No

Been coming to this shithole for 10 years and this is the only thread I've found to be worthwhile clicking on .. i would flick some helpful philosophy your way but meh

Proof there is God,

"For in much wisdom is great sorrow"

Should have learned something useful like biochemistry. You get to learn how things work but at a scale is more grounded in reality and life

Yes I know life wouldn't work with physics but biochemist is a "few steps back of the science microscope on reality" and is more interesting IMO.

Happiness is a choice. Buddha said it as well: "There is no path to happiness. Happiness *is* the path."

Quads of truth. Checked

It's not just gut bacteria that does that tho. Your body is essentially a chemical system in a non equilibrium state trying to reach an equilibrium but never can. these changes in specific chemical compositions drives expression of proteins and enzymes and their function

Read Nietzsche. You are now free to determine your own set of meaning,

The problem with free will and whether it exists is a real issue and not an easy subject to wrap your head around.

Sam Harris has done a lot of work in this field and is well worth listening to if you want to understand the underlying problem.

>still conflates meaning with truth
Lmao this is why u should supplement science with its older, wiser brother, philosophy.

Happiness is an *emotion*. Emotions are not thoughts or insights or knowledge, and thinking about being happy will make you happy just about as much as thinking about going to the gym will make you ripped.

The emotional body is connected to but distinct from the mental and physical bodies. So instead of learning physics (which is a useful discipline, it wasn't a waste of time - you're sort of Bertrand Russell and now you've read Gödel's Theorem) now you can move on to actually searching for happiness itself.

And as others have wisely said, happiness comes from *inside* you - and thus can only ever be found there. Learn to be still, to meditate, to explore and develop your emotional body the way one can develop one's mental and physical bodies.

It may of course turn out having certain kinds of thoughts makes you happy. But you'll only know that from looking inside, not from trying to have all the possible thoughts and hoping one does the magic trick for you.

And from my own experience, happiness lives in that part Gödel-land, that part of boundary of the fractal set where no matter how much one computes one can never quite tell whether it's in the set or not...so one simply chooses. And that's how Faith comes into one's life. It's all just a choice. Consciousness.

Fiat Lux.

CGP Grey literally JUST made a video about this.

It depends on what you mean by "give your life meaning."

You mean purpose. or significance or value? Mere facts won't do that. Nor do they undermine that. Ok, perhpas everything you do, think or become is determined by raw physical laws, and not under any outside control - not yours or anyone eleses. The world is jsut a big watch, and you are cog. But you are a unique cog, experiencing all the other cogs and screws and springs from a unique vantage point. you are a cog that understands its place int eh watch, and can appreciate the beuty of the whole, and the parts, and the parts of the parts. you are a cog that may have to carry on working ina particular way, for a set time, but the complexity of the whole is such that you cannot know what the next moment will bring, or what will happen to you. The adventure of that, the unexpected nature of it, the beauty that arises out of it, are predictable only to the omniscient - to you they are still adventures, joys, and beauties. Even to the omniscient they are all those things.

a cog is valuable - to tohers to the whole, to itself. A cog has purpose - even if we don't think it has an outside designer or God to set its function, it has a function none the less, and it will uniquely function. It is self guiding. At an ultimate level of cosmic scale prediction yes, all your choices are set - but they are still yours. it is you, and no other that chooses, and experiences.

Once you realize how wide and consequential the chasm between subjective and consensus realities are, that cognitive dissonance will evaporate.

Retrieve your father from the belly of the whale and become a real boy. Slay the dragon, rescue the maiden, and claim the gold.

>physics
>determinism
Are you studying physics in high school?
Determinism died 100 years ago. Keep studying and everything you believe will crumble, no worries.

This post is fucking retarded

I love it

What exactly is the problem with hard determinism?
Even if every single detail of your life down to every thought you'll ever have is predetermined, what difference does it make?
You're still experiencing it in real time. We aren't in any way able to compute reality before it happens, so even your life is falling dominos, you're still gonna be surprised by the result.

Shut it, gramps.
Nobody wants to hear your wannabe-wise empty babble.
You didn't even understand what OP was getting at.

wats quantum mechanics

What's you point?

Meh. reduce me an explanatory shit. Learn holism.
Study systems theory, emergence, complexity, synergetics, abiogenesis biosemiotics, evolution, ecosystem science. Fuck around on Stanford encyclopedia of philsophy.
If studying physics led you to hard determinism you did not study quantum mechanics hard enough. That is if you actually studied physics and aren't just some popsci brainlet.
