This was probably John Hughes' finest moment. Excellent performances by Steve Martin and John Candy. It's a comedy with heart, too, and the ending gets me every time. One of the things I love about November is the ability to play this film on an endless loop from the first hint of the Thanksgiving holiday until New Years.
Also, the MPAA told John Hughes that the film could get a softer rating (either PG or PG-13) if he changed the scene where Steve Martin dropped the f-bomb 17 times. He left it in and kept the R rating just for that one scene.
