There are 3 different values of ammo a tank can fire. There are standard rounds which in most tanks are AP or APCR. Then there are gold round these cost more but give more pen. Those types are APCR and HEAT or for the british HESH. each have their own advantages. Then there is HE or HEP.

Nope. Well you can also buy gold ammo with silver but its very expensive. I do carry a good bit of it in case I need it though. That and shooting lightly armored tanks with HE is always a good time. Nah I can only tell based off of what hit me. In the bottom left there is a list of hits and it tells you what kind of ammo hit you. If that is light up in gold then it was a gold round. You dont even need a mod to see that.

I wouldnt either until higher tiers. At lower tiers most likely. I start carrying more than a few of them around tier 5 usually. Need what for myself? Yeah so the 3 types of gold rounds are APCR HEAT and HESH. APCR is on a lot of the NATO tanks and it goes faster than the standard AP round. HEAT is the one on more russian tanks. It is slower than AP but it does not less penetration over distance. HESH is on higher tier tanks. It is pretty much a high pen HE round.
