Combat or not, Navy or Air Force are the best branches to join, in that order. Navy #1. And this is coming from someone who has had family in the Army, Navy and Air Force.

The military has since raised the bar on who they take in, take a practice ASVAB and see if you are really smart
Be clean, has some discipline and not be a fuck up. All the branch has non-combat positions so it's basically it's up to your ASVAB score

Air Force and Navy are the best bet for a civilian-style job (fixing vehicles, computer shit, etc) and will benefit you much more once youre out of the military.
The Army is also a decent place for these things, but the Navy and Air Force are more up your alley.

Take the ASVAB test and see how well you do, that test will determine your course in a military career. I was a high school fuck up and took a GED and signed open contract with the USMC.
Open contract means THEY decide what I'm going to do, I aced ASVAB and they gave me the choice of either Military Intelligence(listening/translating foreign intel) or Avionics tech(fixing jets and helicopter computer systems). I went Air Wing and spent 2 years of my 4 year service just going to school, good times.

As far as OP's concerns go... Unless you're in a specialized unit (that you need to volunteer to go to), you will never be deployed for combat. Also, it has the highest entry level ASVAB score among all the branches, so is arguably the smartest.
