ITT: People with somewhat surprising taste

ITT: People with somewhat surprising taste.

Christopher Hitchens liked Dylan, The Beatles, The Stones, Phil Ochs, Bach and apparently that's it. Which I guess isn't too surprising for someone of his age but you'd think he'd have a bit less (excuse the term) pleb tastes. And that he'd have said something about jazz.

>Dylan

>Pleb
Yeah, no.

Glad we got this bait out of the way first. Good job!

It's the only music he ever talked about in his lifetime. Dylan, The Beatles, The Stones (he thought the Stones were better lyricists because Street Fightin' Man is more well-thought out than ‘You Say You Want a Revolution’ (what he called the song)) and Bach are talked about, briefly, in Hitch-22 and Ochs in a short part of a youtube interview.

It's not necessarily pleb, but you'd expect his taste to be more in-depth.

And by in his lifetime I mean publicly of course.

Stephen Fry said on (I believe) Clive Anderson's show that he really likes My Bloody Valentine
Jim Carrey is a big Death Metal fan
The snooker player Steve "Interesting" Davis is a big fan of Progressive Rock, especially the more out-there stuff like Rock in Opposition and Avant-Prog, and once set up a Magma show in London just to see them
The footballer Pat Nevin's a big fan of 80s Indie Rock, and was once subbed off during a game so that he could go and see the Cocteau Twins live
Penn Jillette toured on a Residents tour as an MC and also released a cassette tape on Ralph Records of him listening to the entire Ralph Records discography up to that point and making funny commentary about it. He also financially supported a lot of Half Japanese's earliest releases.

Another footballer with good taste is Xabi Alonso who's tweeted about stuff like Dinosaur Jr, the Velvet Underground, Pavement etc.

>And by in his lifetime I mean publicly of course.
That might be it. Maybe he preferred talking about well-known artists at public speeches.

Hitchens also said the reason he couldn't write fiction is because he wasn't into music.

Matt Groening's favourite album is Trout Mask Replica

But the instances with Dylan, The Beatles, the Stones and...Verdi (who I apparently somehow mixed up with Bach(?)) were in his memoir.

Dylan was the first rock star to do rap. And by that I mean really do rap.

Bob Dylan is a fan of Ornette Coleman. I was quite surprised he'd enjoy such uncompromising and challenging music. That's not to say that his wasn't, but people didn't react to it the way they should.

Slash is a big fan of Dutch Post-Punk band Minny Pops and invited them to open for him at a London show

Barack Obama is apparently a fan of Merle Haggard, given that he gave him a Kennedy Center Award. Don't know if that means he's a big fan but it happened.

Michael Gira's a big fan of Neil Diamond
Phil Anselmo's a big fan of the Smiths
Neil Young was an early supporter of Sonic Youth and Devo, inviting the first to tour with him and the second to appear in his Human Highway movie

Big Boi from Outkast is obsessed with Kate Bush, states her as one of his biggest musical influences
Makes me smile whenever he makes a Instagram post about her. He's a certified waifu warrior

Robert Palmer was a fan of Husker Du, and covered New Day Rising only a few years after it was released:

RIP, hope the angels are tending to his mental and emotional wounds. :)

Bump

>Michael Gira's a big fan of Neil Diamond

holy shit, I'm into noise rock but I also like Neil Diamond's early stuff.
I thought it was kinda weird.

Sasha Gray likes industrial, noise, and Christian Death. I thought that was pretty neato.

Spanish footballer Xabi Alonso is a fan of bands like My Bloody Valentine, Dinosaur Jr., Pavement and The Velvet Underground.

Same here desu, Neil Diamond's great
Is this a thing or something?

She looks cute. Are there any topless pics of her on the internet?

Xabi Alonso is probably the greatest mind of his generation and future GOAT coach

It is not surprising that he has superior taste

>tfw Cristiano Ronaldo likes Elton John and George Michael...

Wasn't this guy a reactionary pro consumerist libertarian-conservative? What the fuck could he get out of a literal commie idealist like Phil?

That's actually better than what I expected Ronaldo to listen to desu

Hitchens always described himself as a Socialist, actually.

patrician af

>once set up a Magma show in London just to see them
FUCKING LEGEND

Oops, I didn't read the other message about Xabi.

Penn Jillette also likes R. Stevie Moore

but george michael is better than any of xabi's favorite bands

Taylor Swift likes Sigur Ros

I'm not saying that George Michael and Elton John are bad, but they are very normie-friendly.

Penn has great taste in music. He's basically a record archivist and helped out Rhino a lot in the early days.
