If you opened up college to everyone for free, as long as they meet certain academic requirements, there's still lots of people that won't go, or won't finish, because they don't want to, the fuck around, or they aren't capable. The harder degree paths would show higher learning aptitude and would differentiate people as well. GPAs factor in as well.
I would rather the stratification be "who is actually smarter and more applied" than "who was born to a family with more money". And in a free public college system the former is what you can get.
