Why is so much shit talked about this movie?

why is so much shit talked about this movie?
when i saw it as a kid it was fucking awesome and brutal.
now that ive seen it again a few days back, the cgi has aged well, unlike the Jumanji cgi that is cringeworthy, there are good practical effects, and the characters are all lovable. sure it aint have shit to do with the book, but overall it is a good entertaining movie. compared to the new garbage that tries so damn fucking hard to be "action" today, this movie is pretty good

Loved it as a kid too. Never saw 2, 3 and 4 but they say they are awful and there is no John Rico

its a kids movie but a fun one

unfortunately I am grown up now otherwise Id rewatch it now

Because the satire went over people's heads

This. Everyone saw it as a stupid over the top B-Movie and not as the satire and social commentary it really was.

Whose talking shit? I like it
See

It was actually banned in Germany for a while because the censors thought people wouldn't get the satire and see it as pro-militarism.

>Dizzy has stupid pancake tits

This movie has always ruled. It's massively entertaining and still manages to be a semi-clever bit of social satire that doesn't feel the need to beat you over the head with it. I watched it in IMAX about a week ago and as OP said, the CGI has aged much better than most movies. A+ film, will always watch again.

The real question is would you Flip-Six-Three-Hole Carmen or Diz?

The correct answer is Diz

I'll take Carmen cause she has what can be accurately described as gorgeous tits while Diz has

Did has nigger hair and unfortunate tits, Carmen is objectively superior in every way
The real answer is the starship captain though

> Carmen

To this day, I'm amazed how wrong a person can be.

>Dizzy has stupid pancake tits

Yes, that was the big letdown for sure, why couldn't we have had a shower scene with Denise Richards instead...

Anyway, the movie is a hilarious satire, more so than Verhoeven's previous Robocop.

>Liking a ginger with nigger hair and elf ear tits

Wow you're fucking pathetic have some standards oh wait you cant because you're a degenerate cuck hah hurting feelings is the best

You're the one who wants to ride the town bike. Diz only ever had Johny.

Rico is in 3 and Invasion. I just wish the remake would quit stalling and we could get a faithful adaptation of the book.

This groping scene is as far as Denise was willing to go it seems, weird given how Verhoeven seemed to have no problem getting women to go naked in his films (and given how Denise Richards went nude in Wild Things)

>willing to get hanged for a whore that dropped you the moment she got in that elevator thing

For how immortal Rico is he probably gets tons of pussy now

>survive multiple on foot missions against bugs
>almost no scratches to speak of

He better be getting pussy after that hsit

All the actors in the shower scene agreed to do it naked if verhoeven directed it naked.
>no scratches
He almost died on klendathu

Movies are not art. There is only kino. Everyone thinking otherwise is a failed artist in one of the real arts.

>Diz
MuhNiggNogg.png

I guarantee that her agent was the one who pushed that idea as a way to keep her career afloat post Starship Troopers.

>All the actors in the shower scene agreed to do it naked if verhoeven directed it naked.

Which he did, based Verhoeven

>stupid tits
>acting like you wouldnt put some maple syrup on those delic diztits and jump right in
>go away kuk

>verhoeven
>kids movie
really makes you think

Disregard contrarians like him
>gratuitous violence and nudity
>lol it's just a kids movies guize

>crowd of parrotfags who heard "Starship Troopers is satire" and repeat it every time the movie is mentioned like a bunch of lemmings.

Do you even understand the satire? Veerhoven created it incidentally, in an after-the-fact manner. It doesn't directly satirize the qualities of fascism or militarism in all that negative a way, it just asks "What's the future of a fascist state like when so much relies on war, but there aren't wars left to be fought?" In many ways it's a very utopian and appealing society. It portrays some of the absurdity inherent in militant fascism, but like Heinlein's work, there is a certain underlying admiration there.

You also have to realize Veerhoven didn't even read the book.

I'd give you a B- in psych 101

not entirely true. It was deemed to have a negative influence on children, thus banning it for minors, which effectively means (I think) that you can't solicit the movie in public or something

I still liked it because I get off on Casper Van Diem's jawline

>shoot a nuke down a bughole, you got a lot of dead bugs

The movie is great because it's self parodying and intentionally stupid

People who don't like it didn't get it

Carmen is a slut.
Diz is my ultimate waifu, despite the disappointing tiddays.

I think you'll find it was satire of a war that hadn't happened yet.
Compare it to the events leading up to and including the 2003 invasion of Iraq and you'll see.

>Diz is my ultimate waifu, despite the disappointing tiddays.

ultimate waifu / disappointing tits

choose one

look at this sad little boy

>tfw you will never fuck prime Casper

i miss jake busey

...and then there's this idiot.

He's like at 75% Z'dar.

checked. ST confirmed for GOAT

Who was the best trooper after Johnny and why was it Ace?

solid 8/10 film
high ReWatchability

Not Verhoven's best but still pretty good.

There is enough salt in this comment to turn Lake Superior into the Dead Sea.

GOVERNMENT LIED BEST GIRL DIED

FLEET DOES THE FLYIN M.I. DOES THE DYIN

It was awesome when it came out and we watched it two times in the theater.

Voting is the exercise of political authority backed up by force.

>Remember renting this on VHS from the library after school on Fridays as a kid
>Must have watched it 100+ times

Little 9 year old me obviously misread the film and bought the promilitarism and fascist ideals of the movie.

>I've been in the Army for three years now
>I'm Doing My Part
I honestly think it's because of this film.

>tfw when no one stabbed your hand when you reached for the VHS at the library

>tfw made a thread about Starship Troopers the other day that hit bump limit

SST threads are always the best Sup Forums threads. A good mix of fun and actual discussion.

So anyway I picked up the book the other day and started reading it. It's kinda surprising that the bugs are actually a sentient species with technology in the book. I wonder why the movie decided to make them a wild animal.
I kinda like the theory that the movie is actually meant to be a film made within the book universe. So the bugs are actually advanced, but the government portrays them as wild beasts.

Yea there suppose to be made out to be a "faceless enemy" they're dangerous and they're coming to get us, that's all the troopers need to know.
>The only good bug is a dead bug

Also does anyone know where to watch the Rob Ager Starship Troopers film analysis? It was really good, shame it got taken down from YouTube. Last I checked it's only available for purchase on his website.

>Ace
>good

Pussy froze up when he was squad leader. Everyone knows Zed was the real hero of the federation.

In 9 year old you's defense, the movie does a good job of not turning the satire into a complete joke. It's played just straight enough that you could buy that it's actually pro-military.

Verhoeven has an amazing and rare ability to make satire that doesn't feel like it's winking at the screen.

Zed, Zim it doesn't matter. He got the bug, man!

Pancakes or not I remember her having pretty nice nipples, I'll take nice nipples over breast size any time.

Totally agree, one of my favorite qualities about the film, it still has a special place in my heart.
>mfw when my name is Johnny
>poetry

movie is great
carmen hotness
shower scene
dizzy titties
fighting bugs
blur - song 2
fucking crank it up while i'm driving

also saw the cgi series
and got the movie starship troopers invasion

>faithful adaptation of the book

they just sit in robots and roast bugs, then leave.

fucking awesome movie
and catchy song
youtube.com/watch?v=SUpfgFXfkbo

verhoeven didnt even finish the book. he had written a script called bug hunt on planet 9, but the studio had the ST rights and wanted to cash in on it, so what ended up happening was they basically rebranded verhoevens script and borrowed names from the book and nearly nothing else.

>first combat deployment
>freezes for 5 seconds and snaps out of it
>hes a pussy
lol youve obviously never been shot at

Career Sergeant Zim, now Private Zim.

what part had song 2?

The writer of the script, Ed Neumeir, did in fact finish the book and did add as much as he could to add book elements to the film, even against Verhoeven's wishes.

great reading comprehension. the meat and bones of the novel is rico's transition from civilian to soldier and officer, his training, the inner workings of the military, etc.

Ed "the only good bug is a dead bug" Neumeir didnt add hardly anything from the book my friend
>dizzy was a guy
>dies nearly immediately
>johnny is actually juan, and argentinian
and on and on.

>Test audience reactions led to several minor changes before the film was released. Originally, it was clear that Carmen was torn between Rico and Zander. Test audiences, regardless of gender, strongly felt that a woman could not love two men at once, so scenes which portrayed this were cut. These audiences also felt it was immoral for Carmen to choose a career ahead of being loyal to Rico, to the extent that many commented that, in so doing, Carmen should have been the one to die instead of Dizzy. While admitting it may have been a bad commercial decision not to change the film to accommodate this, the directors did cut a scene from after Zander's death where Carmen and Rico kiss, which the audience believed made the previous betrayal even more immoral

So this is empirical evidence that Argentina is and always has been white?

Damn...
What a whore

Diz confirmed for best grill

youtu.be/I8DhVmvcJgA

almost every fucking news reel in this movie is a satire

youtube.com/watch?v=PxPOXexR3v4

Its a sci-fi after all.

>Dropping on Klendathu
>It ain't me starts playing

bump

>flying over vietnam rice paddies
>klendathu drop starts playing

Just time I checked, this movie is universally liked by everyone except Sup Forums edgelords and concerned mothers.

Part of Verhoeven's perfect scifi action trio alongside Total Recall and Robocop.
I could happily watch those three fillums one after another on a continuous loop

>satire and social commentary
That was PV fault for mixing his story with the book.

Honestly, it's pretty shit-tier satire. Europeans like Verhoeven are allowed to wring their hands at the idea of a heavily militarized nation state because they live in a socialist utopia (not quite as much of a utopia these days though) that is entirely protected by NATO. They effectively get free military that keeps them secure and they get to do nothing but sit back and bitch about how bad other people's armies are.

Prime Verhoeven movies are great and are anti-PC as hell, but he's ultimately just another limousine liberal.

make sure you read it twice, nothing is the same but you will still like the movie for what it is.

Does anyone have an official list of bugs?

All of them are freaky but which ones scare the fuck out of you?

Claiming the Arachnid.

It was cool as an action movie and stuff, but I feel that as a satire, it really fell short. Compare it to Robocop, where, while the social commentary wasn't too bright either, I understood it immediately.

Plus, the movie was disrespectful to the source material. Heinlein has written an intelligent book outlining what he considered an ideal society. Verhoeven just got butthurt reading it, and made "dude fascism lmao". And he did it so badly, the audience didn't even get the message.

>intelligent book
>moral science

Pick one. It's a very unironic military dicksucking exercise with fascism sprinkled on top.

Even if the movie was disrespectful, didn't Heinlein say he liked it? I remember somewhere but I don't know where. I might be thinking of something else.

BUENOS AIRES WAS AN INSIDE JOB

Direct quote from Verhoeven:

>When I came to the United States I felt that initially I wouldn't know enough about American culture to make movies that accurately reflected American society. I felt that I would make a lot of mistakes because I would not be aware of things such as expressions and social behavior. I felt I could make science fiction movies because I wouldn't have to worry about breaking any rules of American society. Science fiction reflects those rules but does not represent them.

So fucking this. Buenos Aires was done by the human themselves to invade (and reap) Klendathu

WAKE UP

>Not a satire
Right... and the bugs actually threw an asteroid at Earth from across the galaxy using their butt-rockets.

Doubtful, as he died in 1988.

I'd heard it wasn't based on the book. The studio owned the movie rights to the book and slapped it onto a script that was actually getting made while making some slight adjustments to have it vaguely fit together properly.

Heinlein died in 1988.

Militaries have been a fundamental part of every successful society in history though. This only stopped being a thing in the past 50 years when the US decided to protect sovereign European and Asian nations to preserve the balance of power in their favor.

But Greece, Rome, everything before them, and everything since, all of them have only ever been allowed to flourish because of military strength.

>1997 movie
>satire of fascism
I don't get this. Important wars of the nineties were:
Gulf war, Bosnian war, Chechen wars, Kosovo, Ruanda.

None of them involved any kind of fascism. I really don't see any kind of satyrical implication of fascism in the movie. If anything, it's just military/war propaganda, but nothing over the board, like none of it exceeds the kind of propaganda that was usual for example in ww2 US propaganda.
In fact, the regime is painted quite positive, despita being clearly an authoritarian one, but you cannot really argue that they did anything wrong.

See, that's the thing. Verhoeven was butthurt about the book's military worship and just gave them some vaguely Nazi outfits and we're supposed to think it's a clever satire of fascism. But it's lame satire, because it doesn't really fit with the story, which is just a straightforward sci-fi military adventure.

It's an amazing movie by an amazing director. Always ignore the cunts who say otherwise because they are fucking cunts afterall.

Zim obv

Why does Hollywood always fuck up salutes?
