I think there was a time when they have renamed themselves to ISIL, so it was kinda the correct way to refer to them.
However, as far as I know they call themselves "Islamic State" since a year or two.
So if Obama would want to be really precise he'd have to call them IS or "Islamic State" ... but of course he won't do that because as a liberal American agnostic he knows more about Islam than an Iraqi "Caliph"....

The arabic name of "ISIS" is ad-dawlah al-islamiyyah fil-iraq wash-sham. The Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham. ash-Sham refers to the historic region of Syria, but not to the modern state of Syria; the two are distinct and have different boundaries, hence the Obama administration's preference to translate ash-Sham to "the Levant" rather than "Syria".
