What exactly is so bad about jump scares and why does board make them out to be some grand sin? They're a good way of building tension and have you feeling uneasy in your seat.

LOUD NOISES

They aren't bad, if used in moderation.

some jumpscares are okay

pretentious plebs will always some shit like
>jumpscares are "cheap", is n-not like i get s-scared by them, i swear!!

This. Jump scares, shakey cam, lens flares, all of that shit aren't bad by themselves, its just when a director uses them as a crutch to prop up their shit movie that it becomes a problem.

It's the overuse in a lot of modern horror movies that's made people hate it.

Like okay, I get it. Scary noises then scary music=jump scare #35 of the movie. Gets too predictable.

There's nothing wrong with ice cream.
We've been served nothing but ice cream for decades.
Everyone is making fucking ice cream.
Nobody can cook a fucking steak and we keep getting shoved ice cream in our faces.

But the scariest thing of all would be NOT POINTING OUT THAT THIS WAS A BLATANT, UNREPENTANT FOOD ANALOGY

Because most "Horror" movies do the following:

>Character notices something
>Horror music builds up to a crescendo as they slowly walk towards it
>A "fake" jumpscare happens (I.E something falls)
>They realize that everything is seemingly alright and they were just being overly paranoid
>Silence as the character goes back to being normal
>Suddenly the REAL jumpscare happens
>Character runs from this threat and barely manages to escape
>Rinse and repeat for the next hour

99% of horror movies today are trash that rely too much on these cheap "jumpscares" instead of using actual suspense and terror to make you fear for the character's survival.

theres a good youtube video on this that explains why

Because most "Space opera" movies do the following:

>Communications get disrupted
>Invasion happens
>Rinse and repeat for the next hour

99% of space opera movies today are trash that rely too much on these cheap "communication disruptions" instead of using actual suspense and terror to make you fear for the invasion.
