You have 10 seconds to name a better composition than Holst's 'The Planets, Op. 32: Mars, the Bringer of War'

No argument from me. The Planets is by FAR the best musical piece ever written IMO. My favourite movement is Saturn, although my favourite part in the piece is when the cellos and strings take over the melody halfway through Jupiter. Makes me tear up every time.
Copland, Fanfare for the Common Man, if we're going 20th Century.
Patrician
While this is a fantastic piece, I think Holst is better.
If we're doing 20th C piano, Rhapsody in Blue, y'all.
1812 overture simply for it's wonderful sound as a driving piece of music however I must give credit, the planets are an amazing piece
Girlfriend's Funeral March, period.
Chopin prelude 20 (op28 no 20)
So much emotion.
Beethoven 9th symphonny
Tchaikovsky's violin concerto.... true pathos.
Marry me OP
Please, I don't how I can live without you now.

3.
such a short ditty. how do they expect to be taken seriously?
I prefer Jupiter if we're talking about Holst, but that's just me.
Your dad prefer's Uranus.
Just finished listening to the whole piece. I was aight.
Stravinsky's rite of spring and sinding's rustle of spring contend. And while someone mentioned beethovens 9th I personally prefer the 6th. That and the 7th are monumental as well
Uhm excuse me
I'll add Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto to the playlist
Clair De Lune by DeBussy wtf happened to b smdh
Literal plebeian tier.
Btw, did any of you guys see the DCI 2017 shows yet?

Battle On The Ice - Sergei Prokovief
It's only because most Americans are asleep, I am convinced 70% of the gay/trap threads and banana shitposting and log of shit posting is because of them.
MY MOTHER FUCKING NIGGA
i used to take lots of ACID
and listen to Holst's THE PLANETS
made me go wooo!!!
No argument, It's the best.
I'm pretty sure we're being perpetually flooded by psyops contractor shills to prevent anybody actually using this here free speech platform.
I hope it's not some plot to ruin Sup Forums. cuz its fucking working, I hope its something we can fix by getting rid of the shit like they once got rid of the bronies when that was a huge shit show
Had never heard about this went in expecting some lame shit. I'm fucking blown away. Any other similar compositions or composers?
i'll go with The Engulfed Cathedral, by Debussy.
Lol, what the fuck is going on. I've been going to some orchestration study sessions put on by a film scoring organization and have been volunteering with renotating the entire score. Pic related.
What a fucking coincidence for Holst, of all people, to pop up on Sup Forums
I love this piece, but there is a shitload of excellent music out there. Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe for example is pretty superb as well.
Chi Mai from Ennio Morricone
THIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSS It's so fucking fantastic, The rite of spring is another one which just blows me away, you might recognize it from the first Fantasia as the song with the dinasours
genuine organic memes evolve or lose their appeal over time
that banana thing hasn't changed at all in literally years and yet it's flooded hardcore in every single ylyl thread
stuff like that exists purely to deconstruct and undermine reasons for coming to Sup Forums
but they've been doing that shit since the beginning. I'm pretty convinced 90% of CP is/was posted by the FBI, especially early on and up to the point where they used it as an excuse to sieze the servers.
Trips of truth
Excellent piece
Most of the pieces posted in this thread are great. The rest of the movements from The Planets are great, too. Dvorak, Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Sibelius, Mussorgsky, Strauss, Mendelssohn, Elgar, Saint Saens are all fantastic, too. If you don't mind themes from video games, look Canal Themes from the game Destiny.

Dmitri Shostakovitch is bigger than Jesus
I'm still awake, but this is a serious topic and deserving of separate threads
we need to organize and fix this shit
I know it's absolute pathos, but I still love Tannhauser, especially with horus, and 1812 overture

Here is an excellent, concentrated, lively performance of The Planets for anyone who's up for it. youtube.com
Bach's Branderburg Concerts and Variations Goldberg are pretty neat.
Iron Maiden, from here to eternity
Berlioz' Symphony Fantastique, movement IV "The Funeral"

My person favorite is Brahms' F major viola quintet, the 2nd mvt. Sublime
Doesn't matter how old I am. Just not familiar with western music

The Baba Yaga suite + the great gates of Kiev ending gets every. fucking. time.
that was actually pretty good. The second part starts a little bit too suddenly imo tho
Good answer. Age here does matter a bit though.
When I was a kid I listened to Götterdämmerung on my parent’s collection of 78s. When was the last time a car pulled up next to you at a light and heard Mozart? Do they still teach this in school? There are still too many places where...

Tartini "Devil's trill sonata"
I enjoyed Holsts First Suite in Eb and Second Suite in F much more than the Planets. If we're still on the topic of Holst, "Ode to Death" is one of my favorites.
But as a Euphonium and Tuba player working on a music major I prefer the first two things to play just because they're easier to work with a large wind band with no strings or choir.

The complete version is excellent. The abridged version, whimpy.
My favorite composition? Hard to say... Shostakovich 5 is pretty great.
