What are some other examples of musicians notable for their own bands joining another notable band, like when Robert Smith joined Siouxsie and the Banshees?

Basically everyone who worked with David Bowie.

Warren from Dirty Three joining Nick Cave.

Blixa as well, arguably. He was notable for EN before he formed them with him.

Nick Cave's got good taste in musicians.

Mani went from The Stone Roses to Primal Scream.
Johnny Marr went from The Smiths to Modest Mouse.

Also The Cribs, but you probably don't care about that.

Also Bobby from Primal Scream was the drummer in JAMC

Mike Patton taking over Faith No More?

wasn't debbie googe in primal scream for a bit too?

Only very briefly.
Kevin Shields was actually a peripheral member of the group. He did a bit of stuff on their albums for a while and toured with them a bit. I didn't realise at first but he performs with them here: youtube.com/watch?v=HrQWqBk3uy0

That happened before Mr. Bungle released their first album though.

Yeah, but he's a founding member of Primal Scream so it's not like he went from one famous band to another famous band.

She's been the current bassist since Mani left for the Roses reformation. We'll see if Mani comes back now that the Roses seem like they're done for good.

He was a touring member for a while and has contributed to a few studio tracks but I wouldn't really call him a member of the group.

Ringo was pretty well-known before he joined the Beatles.

Yeah, locally but I don't think you'd say that he was in a famous band before the beatles.

That's why I said peripheral member. He was never a consistent member, but he worked with them a number of times over a long period.

Andy Bell went from Ride to Oasis
Jerry Harrison went from the Modern Lovers to the Talking Heads
Jonathan Donahue joined the Flaming Lips while Mercury Rev were in their eary stages

Joe Strummer was a touring guitarist for The Pogues, then briefy was lead singer for them when Shane MacGowan left

On a slightly related note, there's a live albums that the Stranglers did when their singer/guitarist was in prison for drug possession. The rest of them got Robert Smith, Hazel O'Connor, Robert Fripp, Peter Hammill, Phil Daniels, Basil Gabbidon, Wilko Johnson, Nicky Tesco, Nik Turner, Richard Jobson, Toyah, Ian Dury, Davey Payne, John Turnbull, Matthieu Hartley, Larry Wallis, Steve Hillage and Jake Burns to fill in with him throughout the gig.

Cobra Verde joining Guided by Voices

One of the dudes from Whirr played in Deafheaven for a while.

Simone Butler is Primal Scream's bass player

Lemmy was briefly bassist for The Damned when they reformed without Brian James. He recorded demos and toured with them in 1978 before they got Algy Ward in and recorded Machine Gun Etiquette

He was also in Hawkwind.

Yeah, that user's slightly off. She played bass for them in 2012 when Mani left, but now they've got someone else in

Dave Grohl's turns as drummer in various bands like QOTSA and Killing Joke probably count, but you could argue he's just continued a steady job as a session drummer as well as being a rock frontman in his own right.

Johnny was also in the Pretenders and The The for a while, and has done a lot of session work with other people as well

He doesn't count the guy is in EVERYTHING.

Bill Bruford toured and played the drums with Genesis when Peter Gabriel left, allowing Phil Collins to take care of the vocals. He also left Yes to join King Crimson and played with Gong for a while.

Also Flea and Jane's Addiction

and also Duff McKagan and Dave Sitek post-reunion

William DuVall was in a bunch of moderately notable bands before joining Alice in Chains.

Kevin Shields also joined Primal Scream

Jim O'Rourke was third guitarist in Sonic Youth for a while, and Mark Ibold was bassist

The Plastic Ono Band had a ton of famous people in it as short-term members:
