Maybe I'm too autistic to understand, but why is such a taboo to criticize Islam in mainstream politics?
Religion isn't innate or intrinsic, it isn't exclusive to any race or ethnicity, it is at its core an idea. An idea like an other, that is subject to review and criticism. And why can't I call out Muslims for practicing savage, illogical, and dangerous ideas?

It might be uncomfortable around a Muslim acquaintance and there is the fear of being targeted by extremist violence but besides a select few sjws (such as Ben Affleck) most get it. Trump is getting a lot of hate because he's deliberately trying to get under people's skin and because of the amount of people who are over political correctness it's probably a big reason why he's so successful.

Honestly, OP, I don't know. My best guess is the mainstream Marxist rhetoric that views Muslims as an oppressed class that must be protected from the ruling class. This rhetoric leads to the deliberate hiding or masking of the more common practices of Islam around the world (shame hoods, stoning, etc.) which are, indeed, much less common among Muslims in western countries than they are in predominantly Muslim countries such as Indonesia, Afghanistan, Iran, etc. Another exception: Not all majority Muslim countries are terrible in this regard such as Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan.
Terrible cultural practices in Islam are much more visceral and demand much more societal attention than the terrible practices of Christians, Hindus, Jews, etc. but again, I honestly do not know why these terrible Muslim practices are being ignored by the mainstream narrative and why criticism of Islam is so virulently admonished.
