It has better songwriting than people banging on drums in the middle of Africa. Traditional American folk music is still good though and most of the influence of indie folk. Other countries have some good folk traditions too but a vast majority of the folk music of the world is to accompany ceremonies or storytelling and such and isn't interesting to listen to outside of that context.

Sufjan is chamber pop, electro pop or chamber folk, depending on the album. His first few were the closest to actual folk music but none of his recent are pure folk.
