The gore might put off ordinary viewers, that for sure...

torture porn

It's kino

This. It's just a guy getting tortured all movie.

I liked it
From an atheist stand point, it helps understanding the lore behind Jesus the man and what he suffered in his last days

As a Christian, it humbles you in seeing what Jesus our lord and saviour went through for our sins

It also demonstrates the savagery of the Jews and reminds you that they havent changed one bit

Jew here. I was hard for the entire duration of this movie.

But the Romans were the ones torturing the shit out of him

The Jews demanded the Romans torture him. So yes technically it is the Jews fault.

>"MUH ROMANS PLEASE CRUCIFY THIS MAN PLEASE WE BEG OF YOU"

>From an atheist stand point, it helps understanding the lore behind Jesus the man and what he suffered in his last days

Anyone can understand what he did, it's not some complex idea that needs to be seen to be believed.

Haven't watched this till finish desu. I guess i'll try to torrent it tomorrow lmao

Fuck you, do your own dirty work.

Oy vey, father, why did you leave me?!
pathetic jebus.

I prefer this one. Sure it isn't all factual but it has a better story rather than just focusing on making a Jesus movie as violent as possible as the Mel one was about.

Also: it seems plausible that Jesus would have "lusted" considering he was born in a human body. He was after all tempted but no way can Christians declare that he had no sexual thoughts at all.

>The most well known martyr is Rabbi Akiva, whose skin was raked with iron combs. Despite the pain consuming him, he was still able to proclaim God's providence in the world by reciting the Shema, drawing out the final Echad - "One".

Plus you know, showing that he can have temptations, but can get over them, shows he's better than people who give in.

Well made, and good in the sense that it tried to realistically portray an element of Jesus Movies that gets short-shrift if not fundamentally overlooked: the scourging and crucifixion. Gibson's focus on the final hours of Christ's life is unique and interesting in that, too often, for the purposes of showing the miracles and sermons of Jesus, the crucifixion is often poorly emphasized or relegated to the last few moments of the film. Gibson forces you to deeply observe and consider these actions and events.

The period-setting and attention to detail with respect to language (albeit anachronistic in some parts) and the sets/costumes is commendable and engaging. I highly recommend the Sanhedrin scene.

I'd say the real problems with the picture are the graphic violence can be shocking and the over-reliance on slow-mo sequences can become tedious if the viewer becomes too conscious of it. Other than that, it's a very good movie that one (pious or not) can enjoy, so long as one is interested in experiencing a specific take on the source material.

OP here, thanks anons. I heard some good things about this one too. It's a bit controversial, but i guess it's a sign that this is an interesting one.

totally agree. The way it emphasized Jesus's humanity and the emotional sacrifice he was making over the physical one was so much more compelling than just showing him get tortured endlessly

And we don't even get confirmation that it does anything, besides the chorus at the end. He gives himself to death in complete belief that this is for the good of humanity, a totally selfless act after we see what he gives up. It's very powerful without needing to shock the audience into submission. Because if the sole takeaway if that Jesus got hurt a bunch and that's why he's worshipped, why don't you worship every other martyr in history? I feel focusing on the passion to such an extent misses the point

This remains my favorite Jesus movie. An outstanding motion picture.

Also a good book, btw

>Mel Gibson tortures Jesus for 3 hours

This is the real reason why his career is over.

>Gibson's focus on the final hours of Christ's life is unique and interesting in that, too often, for the purposes of showing the miracles and sermons of Jesus, the crucifixion is often poorly emphasized or relegated to the last few moments of the film.

Maybe because his torture isn't nearly as important as what he said.

Yeah watch it. A very emotional and powerful film

This.

One of the problem about a lot of Bible films is that, the characters can look a bit too self-righteous, having card board personality, and overall can't make you sympathize with their plight, even when you are a Christian.

But humanizing Jesus and the other prophets, films can deliver message or ideas that is often being overlooked in the Bible or other holy books.

I actually found my faith strengthening after watching Last Temptation of Christ years ago (I am not much of a Christian now but back when I watched this film, something about it gave me positivity about myself and better understanding Jesus as a more human type rather than what Mel did).

Is ironic because I know true Christians consider Last Temptation to be blasphemous

Catholicanon reporting in, I literally cry every time I watch this movie, especially in the Jesus-Mary scenes, like when she is wiping his blood. It is truly beautiful and a very Catholic movie.

Those who call it torture porn don't realise how important suffering is to our faith; it is only through suffering that we can come to know Christ and be absolved of our guilt. Christ's suffering was for all of us, if you feel uncomfortable it's because you've forgotten how much Christ suffered because of the sins of man

I was an atheist before and after seeing it, but by the end I understood the appeal to some people

That means nothing to me, because the God part of Jesus always meant his suffering was finite. He could be tortured to death and still return to God. It's certainly a lot to go through but the outcome seemed pre-determined.

The way I was raised in the Catholic Church always overemphasized the God of "God and Man", or solely emphasized it. It was really astounding to see Last Temptation take the opposite route and actually be more powerful
