Seems weird to celebrate a day where the Brits used you as cannon fodder in their wars.

that's part of what we celebrate
before Gallipoli there wasn't much of an Australian identity. People considered themselves part of their state first and British second. It was after Gallipoli that people realised the English really didn't give much of a fuck about Australia, while the way the ANZACs behaved in the fight compared to the English made people aware of how Australian culture had become a distinct thing rather than an extension of England.

Oh so it was like a nation building moment for Australia?
