He feel vulnerable because he's breaking into the house of a suspected murderer. That's from the narrative.
Characterization is all of the physical qualities of a character; height, weight, age, gait, etc. It doesn't have anything to do with this.
I see where you're coming from, but your mistake is thinking symbolism is limited to single objects. In film, symbolism is contained in the entire Mise-en-scene.
