If we're talking absolutely essential, Roxy, Fillmore East, and I suppose Make A Jazz Noise and Best Band You Never Heard all deserve a mention.
I personally love the second Road Tapes album.

...

Seconding, also I think Live Seeds by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds is a really "successful" live album in that it improves on a lot of the songs. Same with Robyn Hitchcock's Gotta Let This Hen Out.

The Who - Live at Leeds

Oh, and The Yellow Shark of course.

live at stubb's and live in toronto are great too

Why not just the complete live box of Coil?

Philly '76?

Anyone who's a cLOUDDEAD fan should seek out the Peel Sessions with Boom Bip, and then perhaps the Themselves and Subtle live albums.

Peel Sessions in general are amazing, my favorite being Soft Machine.

Outside of just listening to the album, I highly recommend seeing the full movie of Stop Making Sense from the Talking Heads. Live music performance at its finest.

I mean, that's probably the most essential of the new live series, since it has Bianca.

Stop Making Sense is a great album to listen to while you get blotto.

Sometimes I think that nobody likes, or even knows this album, and the non-live version is in my top 5.
Is my taste just that awful, or is it that fucking mediocre?
