Biochemistry PhD candidate here, feel free to ask me questions about college/majors/undergrad

I'm truly sorry user.

I lost 150 lbs after highschool and all the diabetics (i'm indian so like everyone) in my family stopped talking to me like I wasn't part of their club anymore. I realized then that obesity is a mental disorder/addiction. There are many causes but in my opinion food addiction about as pitiful as being addicted to heroin because it does about the same damage to your body in the same amount of time.
Maybe a little slower, but that all depends on how often you do Heroin.

Bump

bump

Just get scholarships like I did, barely any debt when you get out. You can apply for the dumbest ones and just get free money basically.

What was the hardest undergraduate class you took and what was the most underwhelming undergraduate class you took.

yea, it's annoying, but oh well. She will probably succumb to mental illness within the next 10 years, her family has a history of it.
While obesity could have hormonal causes, it's fairly rare, i would be careful calling it a mental disorder, i think it only goes there when an obese person refuses to see the problem or treat it, especially if it's affecting underlying health issues (which it will). Addiction in general is pretty crazy, and food addiction has a physical element to it with sugar. Sugar cravings are very very real if your body is used to it.
you're the PA guy yea?

what's it like being smart

>thanks, Im not even sure if the thing I said in the original post is actually right
I do this often, I feign opposition to a subject to pick the brain of the person I'm talking to, especially a sensitive subject to see if I can convince myself otherwise to reaffirm my own ideals.
Maybe I'm autistic, maybe I'll do okay in life, I don't know, I'm just like everyone else in this thread trying to figure out what to do, I've not started college and I'm currently working as a night guard. Hence why im on Sup Forums. There's no one here and im not doing this for the rest of my life, offices are spooky at night and it still smells like farts of the people who were here during the day.
>not to mention overtime is going to fucking happen in this job
>Havent cut your teeth as a guard until youve been on post 20 hours with no sign of relief and the boss is on his way from the next town over to "find someone" because he doesn't have his license and can't cover you because he was an order fluffer for amazon and doesn't know what the fuck security even is supposed to do.

does the level of peer respect vary upon the college you attended?

does college matter in the STEM fields?

hardest was probably Physics 2 because my professor was garbage at teaching and really didnt care. In terms of information, probably quantitative analysis or advanced cell biology (pretty much all protein cascade pathways). Although i had to take a music theory class and that actually was pretty difficult for me personally.

Underwhelming was probably cancer biology, but mainly because i thought it was so complicated/hard to understand, but it was very easy with the knowledge i had from previous classes. That was my last semester of senior year though.

oh capstone was pretty hard just because of the time commitment some of those research papers demanded.

>fairly rare

You're not in the southern USA then. It's not a hormonal disorder, it's a plop in front of the tv and watch high res images of chicken tendies until you can't help yourself and you run to popeyes with a poultry bloodlust because you never learned the sadistic art of self control.
>life is pain why can't I have all the pizza
>because I want to get laid that's why.

My rationale, now.

And no, I'm the guy from the center of the US who's a guard looking to become a police officer or a lawyer, I'm on the fence and I'm in this thread looking for any insight on the two fields since I know literally no one whos actualyl in them. My relative s a federal prosecutor but he's a homosexual cunt so we aren't on speaking terms.

Being smart has helped me realize I'm pretty stupid. Just not as stupid as some people.

I'm not overly intelligent, I am a pretty good test taker, especially standardized tests, and that really helped the GRE. Really i made it because of my drive, i had worked retail for a while before going to school and absolutely hated it, refused to ever go back to a profession where i was forced to interact with consumers. The subject as well helped, i have extreme interest in both biology and chemistry, so studying for the material is actually pleasant for me, im basically satiating my curiosity, and the information sticks because of that interest.

college doesnt really matter for undergrad, it can help you get into a good graduate school program but if you have a good GPA, good GRE, and good letters of rec (and statement of intent), you're good to go for graduate programs. I got into one i thought was way over my head, turns out i was underselling myself, bit of imposter syndrome
Peer respect is pretty subjective to your personality and humility. But unless you're a pretentious dick, you'll get basic respect from everyone, including professors. Especially in graduate school, they treat me like a member of academia already.

This.

This so hard.
I've met several people so incredibly smarter than me, yet i've met so many more that I felt were literally retarded. I like where I'm at. I was always a 3.6 student anyway.

yep, pretty much.

Actually i was born and raised in Houston, so yea i know what you mean. I mean hormonal issues causing obesity are rare, not a sessile lifestyle.
>And no, I'm the guy from the center of the US who's a guard looking to become a police officer or a lawyer, I'm on the fence and I'm in this thread looking for any insight on the two fields since I know literally no one whos actualyl in them. My relative s a federal prosecutor but he's a homosexual cunt so we aren't on speaking terms.
all ill tell you is be careful with being a lawyer, unless you're really exceptional, you'll just blend in with the crowd

thanks for answering the question about colleges.

if one is interested in biology, will there be many physics crossovers? as in, if youre bad at physics but have a passion for bio, do you have anything to worry about?

What can you do with a biochem if not Medical school?

Can someone tell me what would a volunteer at a hospital in the third world do? (country is Uruguay, if someone cares)

it's funny, i was told my whole life "oh he's bright" ect, an i totally realize and appreciate it, but the people who i consider to be smarter than me are like... miles ahead of me. It's probably just a false impression but i dunno, i feel so outclassed sometimes by people with no real basis

>it's fairly rare
Sorry I've been drinking tonight, it's my weekend.
What do you mean blend in with the crowd? I'm not looking to be exceptionally popular but I want to be a prosecutor.
>I want to make pedos cry

holy shit, same thing happened here. small school to big school = humbling realization

Why try to prove something wrong when it is correct?

People are going into nearly unpayable debts to get educated and trained to do jobs that, some of which, likely won't even exist soon.

Take up a trade.

This will always happen. just remember to avoid your own emotional bias on things you believe in and take everyone's point of view seriously and hear them out regardless of how ridiculous it may start out, it is the key to wisdom.
I may be just slightly above average, but I intend to keep it that way or better.

Not him, but if you are just looking for a degree it's not likely you even have to take physics. But physics is pretty much a staple on any type of post bachelor's standardized test. So graduate programs or medical school will be a no go without physics.

>as in, if youre bad at physics but have a passion for bio, do you have anything to worry about?
well i would expect a biology major to be good enough with math to be able to pass a physics 1 course for sure, physics 2 i cant really say because again, mine was absolute garbage. But no, once you're past your sophomore year/get your core classes out of the way, most of what youll be dealing with is upper level biology classes with a math/physics/elective thrown in there. Im not bad with math or physics (up to calc 3), but i certainly never, ever use it. Most biology majors are pre-med, a biology BS is not very valuable by itself, i would NOT suggest it unless you planned to go to graduate school for an MS or PhD or you were premed.
really it depends what i do my PhD thesis on, but i used to worry about jobs. Turns out there's a ton, either in pharmaceuticals, chemical production, genetic studies, bioengineering, or, frankly i will probably do post-doctoral research, or academia.
to answer your question, nothing, you need to go to graduate school or be a lab tech in a biology lab, which is unfulfilling and not very financially fruitful.
what education do you have? mostly probably scribing

call me an idiot, but there are standardized tests post-high school? im not worried, just curious. are there a lot in the STEM fields?

yea im enjoying this thread while drinking myself.
What i mean by that is unless you do exceptionally well GPA wise, the market is fairly saturated with "average" lawyers trying to get into programs. Mainly i just mean the market is a little more saturated than the demand. If you're like a highschool debater though who enjoys argumentation, absolutely go for it

Some business classes are decent.

>bad at physics
What the fuck? They're problems you can think about in things you see in every day life, spin a ball and throw it, where will it land? It's known by something, you can figure it out too.

That's about as complicated as it's going to get as a biology major.

>have fun working at the call center I hear they have great benefits

absolutely.
yes, excellent post. Thankfully i not really an outwardly emotional person, my rationality always takes precedent to my emotions, but yea i have to check myself sometimes when feeling down about it. Comparing yourself to others is irrational, gotta compare yourself to your past state.

>really it depends what i do my PhD thesis on....
Thanks, I was considering that major. Looks like I'll just laugh at all the B.S. Biochem kids as I walk to my class where I learn how to fuck the defendent into giving the state everything he owns for money laundering or something.

fuck off. my definition of bad is different than yours

dont consider biochem/chemistry unless you really really love the subject, and know you want to go to graduate school. It's definitely a waste. Laugh at pre-med kids really, those fucks are delusional

i kno a car menichaic isnt up there with law and medience but do yall think if also i take buniess they pay good if i have my own shop

im starting high school, I will have to choose my path pretty soon.
And im not a minor, sadly

I spent my highschool years on Sup Forums.

I am ready.

is a major in pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry worth it

If you have your own shop you pay yourself depending own how much profit you make from clients. A degree is not gonna increase your salary in your case .

That image made me die a little inside.
i could get into it if I knew most biochem stuff wasn't just making new flavors of lube and was instead privatizing space travel with long lasting foods or bacteria that makes coca cola or whatever the fuck.

Yeah for example for my major in order to get a degree as a senior I have to take a standardized exam and pass to show I have actually learned something over my 4 years. There is also the MCAT for medical school and about a handful of others for more specific medical professions like eye doctor or dentist etc. GRE for people wanting to go to graduate programs and such. I'm sure there are more, but pretty much if you intend on getting a degree then a in you don't have to worry. If you want to further your education after your degree there will be some in store for you.

go to graduate school and yes, unless there is some sort of industry pipeline for that major for your school. By that i mean a company regularly hires that BS degree for industry work. But overall, yes pharmaceutical is worth. If you really like chemistry though, id go for pure chemistry and try and narrow your focus in graduate school, personally i wouldnt want a degree that is tied to an industry that heavily. Like petroleum engineering.

**Getting a degree then a job**

My bad for the typo

Well you certainly spell like the mechanics I know, you're half way there

>I took auto shop in HS and know more than basically every pro mechanic I've talked to
>I just do the dadmode "just lemme doit" when a family member says something breaks on their car because I can't bear to see them get fucked by joe bob danny frank
>mom's clutch pedal adjustment was fucked
>mechanic tries to sell her new clutch
>fixed it,5 minutes and an 8mm wrench
>this shit happens often. Mechanics are worse than jews.

Haha that image is honestly one of the easier charts to figure out from a research paper. Ill try and find a hard one.
You're a little off with what we do, most biochem stuff is protein folding, drug development/interaction, protein pathways, very boring stuff for most people.
good luck
definitely will help, but people on Sup Forums use assloads of fallacies.

Accidently sent before I was done
>not sure if jews or if the only people willing to bust open their hands literally for peanuts are just retarded and doing the best they can.

You don't need business degree, just hire a reputable bookkeeper and work in a shop like one you want to open to see how they operate and you can copy them when you do it on your own. This will also give you time to earn some money to actually open your own shop.

You could illegally sell and harvest organs for the bourgeois.

I studied history and got a master's in education. I'm a teacher. Working at a particular school will take away like 90% of my student loans. I make 40,000 dollars a year. Am I rich? No. But I do own the exact house I want, have 2 great cars, and spent the last five weeks in Europe. There's nothing I want that I can't buy. And summers off. And it's a fun job.

tldr my history and education degree is paying off just fine

>but people on Sup Forums use assloads of fallacies.
>implying alcoholics on trial for indecent exposure who refused legal counsel dont

>Working at a particular school will take away like 90% of my student loans
can you expand on this.

No, the bank has two great cars a house and you're working for them.

How would that be even possible for a volunteer?

as long as you can identify those fallacies and are not convinced by them, you'll be good. But my point is that if you try and go into an argument and you're one of those people, you'll get your ass ripped apart, so be careful

Could you raise a small family off of your salary? But still feel like everyone has everything they could want?

I feel like if you had a wife or do and she didn't work you would be in for hardships. (Along with kids)

Banking
Politics
Business
All exceed STEM salaries at the top ends.

Find the terminally ill people, use internet to figure out what may be wrong with them from symptoms, move them somewhere, accidentally mix up some files, forge some documents that identify mr terminally ill with a good heart as an organ donor with mr got shot in the head with a dead heart and sedate mr terminal so he looks like he's in a coma.
You just need to find customers. that will probably be the hard part but if you play the part of a respectable businessman (which you are) you can do pretty well, you will probably make enough to get the fuck out of any heat comes down on you for it. Just get creative, find a way.

At least that's what Id do, but I sincerely believe that money buys happiness, regardless, i'd rather be crying in a Ferrari.

But the top ends are an oligarchy so fuck off.

Those are mostly through already being rich and connected though. Having more to do with luck of circumstances than work in comparison to the stem fields.

Can't really tell if you are serious, screwing with me or a 14 yo with a lot of imagination, can someone give me his opinion on this subject?

I'm drunk and I have an imagination, and if I found myself in your position I may find a way to capitalize in that fashion because I have a tendency to take big risks for big rewards.

tl;dr i'm a gambling man but fuck casinos

bump

Well it's usually pretty easy especially when youve had a few hours to prepare before you see the dude. Especially when you do it all day. like I said a cousin of mine is a federal prosecutor specializing in financial crimes, they want him to do barely one case at any time and he rarely goes to work/court, he makes around 90k a year and does almost nothing. It's a gravy job. I like a lot of free time.

That does sound like a pretty sweet gig, use him as a resource for sure. But that's pretty specific, financial crime prosecution. Was he ever a public defender or lower on the chain?

what does the diamond in that graphic represent?

nevermind, i think its the person w/the disease

unknown/unrevealed sex

It's different everywhere. Where I live if you work in a school that's not graded as an A school most of your student loans are forgiven. Mines a B school

I could raise a family. I live in a state with a low cost of living. I wouldn't live as comfortably but of course not with people leeching off of you. My wife works. She's a nurse. No kids so far

I own my cars. But yes the bank does have my mortgage.

disease allele (homozygous) is filled in, carrier is the half filled in, no color = normal allele

>medicine, law or STEM fields
these are all vocational, unless you want to become a postdoc researcher there is no reason why anyone with half a brain would go to a classical university for one of those instead of a vocational university and end up paying 28X the tuition.

Western higher education is nothing more than a ponzi scheme that preys on false hope and unrealistic ambitions

Yes he started out as a city public defender, got a job making the same as an assistant to a federal prosecutor and when he moved up he took his job.
I live in a state with a centrally located somewhat prestigious and relatively affordable law program as well as a very popular school medicine.

It's not even worth going into STEM since all those jobs are outsourced to chinks. You're better off going into a skilled trade. Use your college funds to buy some land and start farming.

You seem like you want to do law, i say go for it, especially since you know someone who can actually help you through the process, and potentially help you land a job.
Where are you at?

bump

>studying finance with CS minor at a top 2 program for both minor and major
>no debt bc not poverty/going to instate school so international chinese cucks pay the extra $
>making $70 hr at summer job with, guarantee of >6 figure starting salary

college is only worthless if you are dumb and cant go to an elite school or if you study some useless liberal art

>inb4 finance is useless liberal art

Alright I'm going to tell you kids the one thing that is completely socially unacceptable, that you should definitely do.
1. Go to school for whatever the fuck you think you can actually finish a degree in. Don't pursue a stem field if you hate math, or you'll just waste your time and money and fuck up your life.
2. Do it, whether it's a 2yr, a 4yr, or whatever the program requires and you can handle. If you have the option to continue on to post, but know you're already freaking out about the debt your undergrad cost you, take whatever degree you have, pound the pavement, start gaining practical hands-on experience.

Now, do this. Go back home, and beg your fucking asshole parents to let you live in your room for a period of three years while you work and pay off your student loans. Go make your starting pay, 20-25/hr, (40-50k/yr grosse, or about 33k per year net) remember nothing you learned in school has any fucking real value yet and won't until you back it up with years of experience, so stay fucking humble in your job, and to your parents, to not get booted from either, and spend three whole years putting away damn near every dime you make.

In three years time, you leave your parents house and have got it fucking made with: a decent first job to move on from, and nearly a hundred grand in the bank.

That's fucking ideal, bc after that, when you realize how looong it actually takes you on your own to save up a hundred grand, no matter how much you make, putting away thee years of income won't happen again for fucking decades. It'll allow you the option to get into a house instead of spending years pissing away tens of thousands of dollars paying for other peoples houses via rent. You start adding that shit up, and you're in damn good shape to be one of the few who will actually get to retire someday.

Fucking bite the bullet, and do it like the Italians do it.

I saved the last thread to read it again, it was really interesting and wholesome, I can upload it if there is someone interested, any takers?

Completely agree that STEM are the ONLY majors worth going to college for. And MAYBE business and finance, as I have quite a few friends who did well post graduation with those degrees.

I initially wanted to get my doctorates in pharmacy but then realized it would put me into more than 200K of student debt compared to going to a cheaper school for biochem and spending about 50K total. Also found out that pharmaceutical sales pays significantly more than an actual PharmD does in the market. From there it was an easy decision to just go for my bachelors in biochemistry. The degree was a fucking joke to obtain except for having to take Physical Chemistry as I am not the greatest at physics... But that aside - I'm now I'm 27, work for a pharmaceutical company, have paid off all of my student debt, and my net worth is very close to exceeding half a million dollars. Going to college for STEM was the best decision of my life.

What I can't stand is the liberals on college campuses with bullshit majors who can't find a job after graduation and then we end up with politicians like bernie sanders who wants to fuck over people like me who made smart decisions in order to subsidize all these idiots who go to college for shit that has no viable job market post graduation and end up in debt and think it's somehow societies fault instead of their own.

Protip: Research the projected job market 5+ years down the line before choosing a major. If there is no market or it is expected not to grow or even to diminish, don't make that your major unless you want to be poor and in debt forever. You'll have no one to blame except yourself.

yeah i want to read that

>stem aspies only value other stem aspies
Well no shit. Ya don't say.

if you want a society entirely comprised of aspies and a fucking shitload of impoverished people with no other skills, then sure, great plan. If you want a functioning society that isn't a giant welfare party, then sort yourselves out ffs.

oh baby, you're me in 5 years. but only 1 year older :(
did you get a masters or get hired with a biochem BS? And hahaha i didnt have to take p-chem!

I'm in OK.

> If you want a functioning society that isn't a giant welfare party, then sort yourselves out ffs.
how is it our fault they decided not to obtain skills in demand?

Retard, if all the libberuls on college campuses did what you did, you wouldn't be in that job either. It takes a lot of people not making money to do the work to support on faggot exploiting and capitalizing on the instability of the system and getting rich as stink.

Here you go, I recommend reading first the posts answering to the OP

mega.nz/#!qQ9HnaBK!VeMvsl6THFV2ka40vcwUatPt8EMU29v3nyMeenXJD10

History major, apply to edward jones, get trained edward jones, leave edward jones, die

College is honestly whatever you make of it. Even for those with what many would consider worthless majors, college can still be very beneficial because of the connections you can make which can help you greatly in the long run.

Go to a trade school.

for 10k investment you can earn 80-90k per year as a tradesworker.,

>He's not in OK
>No one is in OK
>Oklahoma is not OK.

>fault
Are you 8? It's not about fault you pleb, and there's nothing wrong with not being a fucking mooch and a drain on the rest of society so you can be excessive in all things. Some people actually do work that has greater value than money you fuckin jew. The system des not provide infinite opportunity and infinite wealth, and doesn't need to.

Enjoy being replaced by software.

no you wont and also you're going to break your leg.

More than once.

I only have a bachelors in biochemistry. Pharmaceutical sales jobs do not require anything further so I didn't feel the need to continue on when I can start making big boy money immediately upon earning the 4 year degree. Would have been an effort in futility for me. The only real disadvantage I have is that I work very long hours if you include my on call hours. 60 hours is an average week for me. But I look at it this way. I'm young. I'm not married. I have no kids. I can handle it and earn my keep in my job now. Later on after solidifying my position here I can look for a better work/life balance. Right now I'm just setting myself up for a comfortable future.

And you are quite lucky to not have had to take Pchem. That class was insanely difficult. I assume you had to take mechanics with calc and electricity and magnetism w calc. Pchem makes those look like first grade math class by comparison.

damn you're mad. must be one of those liberal degree holders. Sorry you didnt make better decisions in life user

Implying that these people going for "Easy" degrees like art and music and psych could handle a biochem curriculum. I assure you it's not as easy as you think it is. Much harder by any metric of comparison.

wrong on all points.
nice try though.

Oh gotcha, yea im currently in 0 debt due to scholarships and dont really want to go work yet, i have 6 years retail experience and really just wanna chill and study, do research and shit. That's great you're completely free from responsibility/dependents at the moment, sounds like you're doing a good job of setting up your future user.

Where did it say anything like the word "easy"?

Read what I actually wrote, not what you imagined I wrote.

This, if you pick the wrong one.
Carpentry is for spanish speakers or white guys who work alone, plumbing is if you want to get nasty at first, then work your way out of the poop and make a lot doing relatively easy work, Auto shop should be taken, you'll need it, mechanics make dick though, that's why they rip you off, they can't make ends meet unless they do.

so why are you so angry then?
>it's not about fault
your right, it's about personal responsibility. They have none. You know how many of those people refuse to work minimum wage or a retail job? I shouldnt have to subsidize their bad decision, i should subsidize people who never had the choice to begin with.
> and there's nothing wrong with not being a fucking mooch and a drain on the rest of society so you can be excessive in all things. Some people actually do work that has greater value than money you fuckin jew. The system des not provide infinite opportunity and infinite wealth, and doesn't need to.
i have no idea why you brought this up or what it has to do with the post you linked.
>Enjoy being replaced by software.
im a researcher, probably the last thing to be replaced
