okay, since you actually seem to not know anything about whatsapp:
Whatsapp uses your data instead, and you can use it on WLAN. It's great for group conversations, sending pictures and videos and it has an inbuilt video chat. Also you can send voice messages, which is great. The app is perfectly optimized and pretty much everyone in germany and europe is using it. SMS feels so slow and outdated in comparison, although I see that almost any US citizen is still using it.
