Audience is told character is excellent at poker

>Audience is told character is excellent at poker
>Wins with a no brainer decision with the absolute nuts

What do writers mean by this?

This shit absolutely infuriates me. When they say a character is really good at poker, what they really mean is "they get really good cards".
Don't get me started on the "everybody has an obvious tell" meme.

>It's a Bond splashes his chips everywhere movie
>It's a Bond slow rolls everyone last even though he should have had to show his cards first movie
>It's a Bond gives the dealer a chip as a tip even though they already established all the money is an escrow that will be transferred to the winner's bank account so there's no way the dealer could cash it at the casino movie

Texas Check em'

FUCK

>good at poker
>good at the game of luck
kek

Well played

desu it is pretty dumb. theres no way of telling if the 'tell' is just him doing it to try to throw you off or if hes really doing it.

also the whole idea of a tell is retarded. you don't subconsciously do things when you're not telling the truth about your cards.

if you can't spot the sucker in the thred within the first 2 minutes ur the sucker

Shiny and chrome, brother.

>Bond calls an all in with kings full of aces and gets beaten by quads
>Rather than a sick cooler this is treated as proof Bond is too reckless

IT'S NOT POKER

IT'S BACCARAT YOU FUCKING RETARDS

It would probably take me at least 20 minutes to explain to an intelligent person how an edge is gained in this game and the fundamental concepts behind it.

It's impossible to display someone's poker skill in a few minute long movie scene to an audience of mostly drooling retards. And even if it was possible it's not sexy at all. At the end of the day it's just a bunch of boring as shit math and working on your ranges.

>"At the end of the day it's just a bunch of boring as shit math and working on your ranges."
>the main character says as he walks away with a cool $200k in a duffel bag

...

>It's impossible to display someone's poker skill in a few minute long movie scene
The best way is probably to show a bluff. It's sexy, takes skill and it's what 99% of people think poker is about.

>We must beat the bad guy at cards so he goes broke and has no choice but to cooperate in exchange for protection
>Wait, can't we just kidnap him? Then he'll also be broke and have no choice but to cooperate in exchange for protection

>>the main character says as he walks away with a cool $200k in a duffel bag

Which is as much of a bullshit as the whole "tells" shtick since the session he just played was actually 30 hands or something ridiculous like that and it's outcome has very little to do with his skill.

>It's a "Bond loses AA to AK in the first round and they can't proceed with their plan and he has to come back and explain poker to everyone at the office" movie

Rounders is a fun movie but it had this in full force.

>Player plays with an oreo in very specific ways before acting
>My God, his tell is what he does with the cookie!

>>>the main character says as he walks away with a cool $20 and a duffel bag

>Vesper was in charge of deciding whether or not to give Bond a rebuy
>Has absolutely no understanding of poker and couldn't be bothered to buy a Texas Holdem For Dummies book so the old guy has to give her a play by play explanation

Yes I know it was to explain to the audience, but it was still lazy.
