Dumb tech question time Sup Forums:
If I'm using AT&T U-verse, is buying/using a VPN basically pointless since I absolutely _must_ use AT&T's supplied gateway (modem)? Seems like ISP could still see exactly what traffic is going through, unless I'm a complete dumbfag and missing something.

VPN traffic is encrypted. They cannot see anything except useless packets of data. So don't worry. Use a reputable VPN, something like Private Internet Access.

Thanks user.

you betta worry nigga. your isp is connecting to the vpn, not your computer

You'd still be using their modem. You're connecting to your VPN through AT&T

This

To elaborate this nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/FIPS/NIST.FIPS.197.pdf

VPNs use private public key paired encryption also known as asymmetric encryption. As long as the VPN provider is reputable the information that passes through your ISP will look like gibberish to them. They can see the amount of data being transferred, but not what it is.

Yes you are a complete dumbfag. But that's ok you know now.

If you still don't understand this is the most basic explanation I can offer you.

If you ask specific questions I can give you specific answers.

Wrong dipshit

Also interested here, complete noob on how to use vpn exactly and if buying/signing to a reputable one is the only choice

First off get a 5268 instead of that piece of shit 589

>Yes you are a complete dumbfag. But that's ok you know now.
Thank you. I'm about to involuntarily crash but I'm saving your post to read later, and it is appreciated.
And the reason I want a VPN is because I just worry. I don't look at cheese, but I do browse a lot of regular porn sites, and sometimes it inevitably gets through the cracks on them. We've probably all seen it happen.
Or shit, when it happens here.
I like torrenting, but I pretty much just torrent stuff that no one is going to come after me for, like fansubbed anime that isn't even licensed anymore.
Quick question if you don't mind: does seeing the encrypted gibberish raise a red flag to the ISP?

when you use a VPN the data is encoded BEFORE it goes out to the modem, so your ISP can see only encrypted data. same is true in the other direction.

If they're inspecting your packets for VPN usage, then you're using the wrong ISP. The only person who will give a shit is the NSA. They cache a load of VPN traffic to attempt to decrypt later.

> raise a red flag to the ISP?

everyone who works from home is using a VPN so that would be a lot of red flags.

Which ATT and the NSA work together

You are looking for a 0 knowledge VPN that does not cooperate with the DCMA laws. Typically the good ones are paid.

Every time you pretend to know what you are talking about on the internet and don't baby Jesus cries. pls stop.

An easy to use paid vpn is airvpn. If you want to understand the math behind it look at the link I posted FIPS 197 from NIST, which is the standard that that most governments use for secret and top secret data transmission. It is mathematically impossible to break, and has been since the early 90s. Even a supercomputer can't break it. The FBI has been trying to crack a specific key since 2006 with no luck.

First off if you are a pedo faggot fuck you, second off the rules of encryption still apply to you even if I do not approve with what you do with it.

see

They can see the volume of data you are sending and receiving nothing else.

This of course does not protect local storage which you would use the same protocol, but with secret key instead of public. Full disk encryption still works amazing well, always use open source encryption methods as, the proprietaries usually give access to the government. *cough read snowden leaked documents cough*.

Are they actually better?

be quiet r4

Correction: you are sending encrypted packets of data through AT&T. They can't know what that data is because it's encrypted, and it isn't worth thier time or money to decrypt it

Honestly depends on your service and size of your house/apt and if youre using a 3rd party wireless router but the 5268 has a broader range as well and pushes a 5ghz and 2.4 ghz signal, so if you're on fiber optics or vdsl its better

It's a very uncomplicated diagram. I'm drunk and can't really MS paint better than that right now.

If you do it properly they can't decrypt it. Nor can they subpoena information that doesn't exist.

You don't understand how the protocol works. Perhaps read it first then try again.

>First off if you are a pedo faggot fuck you
No no, I'm just overly concerned when I'm browsing a porn site and something questionable comes up, or when something gets posted here in a thread I've clicked on.
I also don't like the direction Google is going in. -_-

the line is blue because it's a tunnel. I probably should've said that.

Use bing for porn

0 knowledge VPNS offer indiscriminate anonymity. Google and every other internet mogul does it.

Your balls are blue because your little sister is at camp for the summer. Don't back peddle now.

use rope for suicide.

Not using a 3rd party wireless router as it's just too much of a pain the fucking ass to set it up behind AT&T's RG. I basically have two PCs, one is work stuff related and connected by LAN, the other is my PC here in the bedroom that I do all the fun stuff on, and it's on the WiFi, in the other end of the house. I pull a decent enough speed over the WiFi, and I don't game at all anymore. Downloads could be faster though.

Are you buying a cheap 3rd party router most of them are essentially plug and olays like a netgear nighthawk then just turn the Wi-Fi off of the rg the nighthawk already h as a far better wifi range. Besides the fact pretty much all ATT equipment is refurbed

Awhh its okay edgelord
