People who bitch about not getting tips should get better jobs. It's not my fault they're reduced to waiting tables or delivering pizza.

Elijah Morgan

waiters earn via tips to supplement their pay. they get paid, the businesses are just fucking greedy and for some retarded reason, americans are too retarded to put an end to this. giving people a decent wage in that shit hole of a country is considered socialism or some retarded bullshit.

tl;dr:
americans are fucking stupid.

Hudson Reyes

It depends on where you go to eat. Waiters usually have below minimum wage as they are mostly paid in tips. It gives them incentive to perform well as fear of earning a fixed wage would inevitably yield some people who don't care and could hurt the bottom line.

Server wages are just enough to cover their taxes (social security, state/local/federal income tax, FICA, etc). If you don't tip they literally don't make any money.

Obviously this is super outdated, but the argument from the businesses is that they can't afford to pay servers more or they would have to raise prices and thus lose customers. Buuuuut customers already are paying more to cover the tips that employers aren't paying their workers so.... IDK.

Most of us do not feel bad for not tipping. Mainly because most waiters/waitresses don't care and put out minimal effort. But there are a lot of restaurants that automatically put a tip in your bill. Usually resulting in you tipping twice because no one tells you. There are times when I've left a big tip because the waiter was a cool guy and made it a better dinner. Usually waitresses just expect it cause they are girls who shake their butt more when they walk.

No the waiters don't get paid. In some places they do, but in most places waiters are paid below minimum wage and thus need to get tipped to actually make enough money to feed themselves. America is fucked up in regards to paying their employees living wages. The US is basically on its way to being a third world shit hole, and most of its citizens are so stupid they support the decline of their own nation and economy.

Waiters are incapable to find a bettet job and that's the reason why they are basically slaves in the USA, while foreign waiters have been capable of making their rights count.

When I go in the USA I always avoid tipping. The service sucks, I never go back a second time in the same place. Like I care. Fuck your barbaric shit.

Chase Robinson

No, the waiter's get paid less than normal minimum wages BECAUSE they are expected to generate further income from tips.

Working at a similar job, my pay was $4.50 per hour from the company, but I made on average $12 per hour after tips.

I think a long time ago it was a way for businesses to pay employees less and now there's just no way of fixing the problem. It's too engrained in how American restaurants function.

Don't get me wrong though, I think it's stupid as fuck.

The American minimum wage is falling behind to start with, and waiters for some reason don't even get paid that. Im not saying there isn't a better way of doing things.....but servers have to pay tipshare to their busboys, bartenders, hosts, and sometimes even the kitchen. This is usually 3% of the their sales for the shift. So if your tab was 100 dollars, and you tip 0, the waiter still has to pay 3 dollars in tipshare to the restaurant....meaning they just paid 3 dollars to be your server.

I understand how people are irritated or confused by this system...but it's part of the deal and if you don't want to tip...don't go to a full service restaurant. or be a nigger. your call.

Also to make you even more mad...guess what your servers aren't starving. They are often making 100 dollars a shift...maybe 200 or 300 depending on the place.

Benjamin Reyes

you think it's easy than try it motherfucker. You don't deal with one table at a time most of the time so you have to deal with the needs of multiple tables which some nights leads you to taking care of 15 to 20 people at a time. So try to keep all those people happy and taken care off while you literally run from one end of the restaurant to the other. Seriously all you pieces of shit that refuse to tip you are garbage it's not a good system don't get me wrong it should change but it's not the servers fault. Also you have no idea what someones life is like as far as higher education goes so stop the judgement not everyone has the money or opportunities to go to college. Also I've seen many a lazy server but 1 of 3 things always happens either they quit because they suck and aren't making money, they quit because the job is stressful, or they suck so bad they get fired

You are one of those people who would like to be the CEO of a company or a politician because those are easy jobs with no work involved, right?

Lucas Sullivan

its not just carrying plates. You have to take orders accurately( not hard on it's own but dealing with the public is never easy) and deal with people while simultaneously keeping everyone happy and the flow of everything going. Kitchens also make mistakes a lot so for a example. Table 31 just sat and is waving at you because they are in hurry, table 32's food just hit but someone didn't read the ticket properly and there missing a side and the dressing is on the salad even though you asked for it on the side, table 33 is holding up their beer glass pointing at it with an exasparated look because they want another, table 34 then asked for 5 seperate checks but split the apps 3 different ways( they are also in a hurry) and table 35 is some dumb rachet nigger who just handed you 5 dollars in cash on a 120 dollar check(shaking your hand like he just did you a favor) but his card just got declined so now you have to find a manager in the middle of the rush to get the payment deleted so the nigger can give you his phone while his gf waits and he goes to the atm...to fix all these problems you gotta go run to the back of the restaurant to fix table 32's food but table 31 is literally freaking out because they haven't ordered yet so you stop there first and then they ask you a 1000 questions and then say "how long will it take? we are very hungry."(they are pakis or some shit)...

so anyway it's not rocket science but it's more than just carrying plates. Customer service in this kind of enviornment can be very difficult because people suck and if servers didn't make as much as they did then the job would be attracting even dumber motherfuckers then it already does and it would become impossible to enjoy a meal at a full service restaurant.

Andrew Davis
Andrew Davis

I wont suggest that the system in current use isn't broken, it has its flaws. However, it also keeps your food prices down allows some things to be free of charge, and keeps your server attentive to your needs provided they just don't suck as a person in general. The 15% to 20% that most people tip helps to keep the average cost of a meal down by 30% to 40% verse menu price. When the price of a meal is conceived, generally speaking you are paying for only the protein or featured item at a rate of 3 times its distributor price, whatever default sides come with it are almost always gratted, as well as any garnishes, sauces, condiments, a lot of places include free refills for soft drinks, and so on. Besides the price of the protein or main dish item going way up if servers started making min wage with no tip credit, all those other things would start being charged for as well. Want a bottle of ketchup on your table? That's fifty cents. Starch and vegetable options with your steak? Seven-fifty. That burger or wrap you get for lunch once a week that costs 7.99? It's 12.99 now. Oh, and good luck getting your servers attention, restaurants run on a skeleton crew when ever possible and rarely have a backup plan if they get a rush, you might never see your server again after you get your food, as she has 10 other tables to wait on instead of 3 or 4.

The current system has a lot of flaws, servers make a shit ton of money more than the people actually making your food, and bartenders make even more than servers. in the grand scheme of things, that smelly fucking NEET that came in and didnt tip on his 12.99 bill isnt more than a pebble in the ocean.

Juan Walker
Juan Walker

Tipping is now commonplace in the U.K. as well. Difference is those servers do get paid at least the livable hourly wage, some earn decent money. I don't mind leaving a small tip for good service but you can fuck off at 10%, which some places add as standard. I just pay the bill minus tip when they do that, should always be customers choice

Kevin Sullivan
Kevin Sullivan

do the waiters not get paid?

Historically, tipping started in the South. The practice was to tip the white waiters and to stiff the black ones. It was a way of legalizing wage discrimination by relying on racists to ensure blacks didn't get paid as much as whites.

Have the balls to tell them you're not tipping when you get there so they know you're not a priority and that they're literally paying to take your table. As for the rest of you faggots, it's not like better jobs just fall from the sky and someone is going to take you off the street with no experience to work a decent salary job. this, at sports bars and whatnot a piss beer goes for around $2.50 to $4 per bottle
a 6 pack of piss water ranges from $5 to $8 at a local store, add $2~ if you go to a gas station
if you go to a game or a convention where everything is overpriced like a mothrfucker, $8+ per fucking beer.

I agree with some of this... $2 a beer is a bit excessive though. $8 bottle of beer at 20% is only $1.60. Granted if I go to a bar and only get like 1-2 beers I'll still give a couple bucks as like... just a minimum.

I only tip for 8-10/10 service at places i dont normally go like places out of town or places that serve food i dont normaly go for or places someone asked me to. The places i frequent (barber, resturants, bars) i tip high for recognition but i also am vocal with them about a meal that turned out wrong or my hair cut. I take care of them, they take care of me. In the odd case i get a shitty waitress at a place i frequent i just give close to 5-10% depending on the bill which is low but something nonetheless. I would certainly notify a superior if it was that bad
