You can check The-Dream's "Love King" and "Love vs. Money" as well as Jeremih's "Late Nights with Jeremih" (mixtape) to see if this vein is for you. I personally love this direction.
Jeremih is more gentle and atmospheric most of the times. But The-Dream has some crazy ideas and swagger.

Love Deluxe by Sade is very calm and jazzy, Boyz II Men's CoolyHighHarmony is upbeat at times and also has great ballads and it's just a nice showcase of early 90's r&b,Voodoo, Brown Sugar, and Black Messiah by D'Angelo are some of if not the best written in the genre, Thriller is an absolute classic, Baduizm is another strong r&b classic, CrazySexyCool by TLC is a very influencial album that leads to artists such as SZA, and lastly I recommend Al Green's I'm Still in Love With You and Marvin Gaye's What's Going On. Sorry if this was too long, hope you listen to these great albums.
