Women and children first is a tribal instinct that is still around to this day. Most adult males have already contributed their share to the tribe. Thus, they are expendable like an empty cartridge.

Women can conceive babies and make more people while a male is just a sperm shotgun. Children have yet to mature and have more potential to contribute to the tribe since they have many years ahead of them. On a risk management level, it is a very good selection.
