I think some of the 9/11 aspects of the movie were lost by later audiences because of the movie's release date officially being 2011. It was made in 2004 though and it is absolutely a look at NYC post-9/11. Do you remember the frequent classroom arguments, and I do mean hostile arguments, regarding the Israel-Palestine situation? There are explicit remarks about the decision to "bomb our city." I also think the movie is meant to be about a character who is struggling deeply to recover from a tragedy and I think in her struggle we are meant to see a nation/city's attempt to rebound after a tragedy that seems so arbitrary.
