I agree DAMN. is way more commercial, that's why it sold so much. But TPAB is far from commercial, "I" was a dud of a first single compared to humble. TPAB can't be called mainstream in the traditional sense, there's not a single trendy instrumental or style on the whole thing, yet it still went platinum and did 350k first week.
I think kendrick just did a REALLY good job of selling himself with gkmc, he has a very large, dedicated fan base. who'd support no matter what.
So when he makes music that appeals to a broader audience, he gains more fans and his core fans don't really flip out on him for it. Though i admit i was one of those who hated humble at first.
