This argument falls flat on its face when you consider that the purpose of a VG soundtrack is to immerse you further into its gameplay and atmosphere. If it does that well, then the soundtrack has succeeded in its purpose. I'm sure there aren't many that were intended to be listened to on their own, although you most certainly can, unless someone wants to provide a few examples.
