Why would you want to bring back a failed state? Austria-Hungary was probably the most unstable state in Europe by 1910. Hell the entire Austrian empire would have fallen apart if Hungary and the Slavs successfully separated in the 1840s. No one wanted Austria-Hungary back then why bring it back now?

Why would we separate? The AU gave us unity with other European peoples, in a conservative moral union, which almost gave each people their own state within a federation.

true, but keep in mind that the main goal of the '48 revolution to gain back the autonomy for our affairs (justice/internal affairs/administration/own parlaiment) and we actually achieved those with the compromise (only finance/army/foreign affairs were joint, but thats reasonable)

That is true however would a Federation really have changed anything? Look at Yugoslavia or Czechoslovakia. These unions didn't last and that's because the dominate ethnic group takes power the rest want out.
Read up on Austroslavism. Slavs in AH didn't have a history of nationstate-hood and weren't that keen on living in a separate state. They did want more autonomy etc, but separatism wasn't mainstream.
The hungarians were problematic because they did have a history of being a state. and even franz ferdinand considered the formation of AH as a dual monarchy a mistake.

Because there are higher concepts than nationality (race, culture, religion) and because a bunch of countries with the population of 5-10 million people can't really do anything for their own interests. Of course the EU should have helped that, but it's for different interests apparently.
