They are trying their best to make the audience feel bad for these people. But I'm having a hard time feeling any sympathy for a country that attacked Pearl Harbor out of the blue and stabbed us in the back. The word "terrorist" has a meaning and it's not "brown person who the TV says wants to kill me". Using the mass murder of civilians to scare a group of people into compliance is terrorism by definition.
The idea that the bombs were dropped to save American lives is propaganda. Japan had offered conditional surrender, but the US would only accept unconditional surrender, then when they offered that the US gave them a lot of what they wanted. The same surrender was probably possible through negotiation, but that's impossible to know because no attempt to negotiate was made. The bombs were dropped so that the US could show its new power to the rest of the world.
