He fell for the computer "science" meme!

>He fell for the computer "science" meme!

I'm surrounded by Indians at work. Our IT workforce is at least 50% Indian now.

Therefore, fifty percent of your work's street will have been filled with poo

>implying you can only program with computer science.
Get out of programing into something like devops or infrastructure arch.

Are you low level or higher up on the totem pole?

I'm above a junior position now. I started working in IT 3 years ago. Wouldn't be surprised if Indians replace most of us.

That really blows because I'm getting into IT and I'm a junior in Computer Science. Computers are all I know. ;_; where do I go now

Just keep going and get some internships. Internships helped me out a lot.

I'm in Seattle. It's no meme ... Facebook is building a new office here with 1,000 employees. Google is opening a huge campus in SLU and is expected to employee thousands more (already employees 1900 in the region). Expedia is moving near downtown in the water, employeeing 3,000 at that campus. Then there is of course Amazon in SLU, Microsoft all over but mostly on the eastside, Redfin, Zillow, an Oracle office, an EMC office, an Ebay office, Boeing ..

It's not a meme in the PNW. I grew up here, and the growth is terrifying. I'm a software engineer at one the aforementioned tech companies, and even I'm afraid of getting priced out of the housing market.

Also certs

poor show

How many of those are useless companies that won't be here in 5 years? Just hope Google,MS or Apple buys you right?

>He fell for the 'biology is the only STEM major which doesn't require mathematical skill' meme!

WA has been hit the hardest by h1bs.

>STEM

I fucking hate Seattle...I lived there for 12 years

yeah, my buddy is making over 100k cad after learning how to make apps on iphone and android. i mean the guy learned that shit on his own outside of school, and started his own projects with other dudes. comp sci is useless on its own, but you gotta learn other shit on top to make it worth millions.

But then again, that can be said for any other bachelor's degree.

who else /softwareEngineer/ here?

im going into my 3rd year of 5, seems like I've been learning what Baljeet will learn in his coding class, but will become the guy that hands him down the model of the actual coding to be done. feels good man.

are they all reaching for their noses to avoid the smell?

>he fell for the codemonkey meme
it's just to keep the cs field thin

Most CS can't even program fizzbuzz, their head is buried in books of theories no one cares about in industry. Software engineering is actually the red pill of CS.

Did your job take out half its restrooms too?

idk, CS major seems to be dime a dozen today. theres at least 5 CS Major classes at the uni i go to, but only 1 Software engineer class.

Of the companies I listed, which do you feel won't exist in 5 years? Most I listed are large and doing quite well. Zillow and Redfin could see instability. Expedia is 20+ yrs old and keeps buying all their competitors. Who knows about Ebay. Oracle is massive with deep pockets. Amazon is going nowhere. Boeing could continue moving out of the state.

1 in 6 are dumb enough to go software engineering. Sure, both will end up getting the same job in the end but don't fool yourself into thinking software engineering is anywhere near as complete as a computer science curriculum.

>Friend and I got into CS together
>I dropped out after 5 months because too much math
>Took a two year IT course instead where I was provided with a cert in VMWare and a MCSA in Windows Server 2008
>Started working at a small hosting company for peanuts
>Friend laughed at me because he would be swimming in money once he graduated
>Fast forward 5 years, today
>He's a codemonkey, earning 29.000 DKK a month
>I'm a deployment specialist making 35.000 a month
>About to take my CCNP
>Will recieve another 5000 a month when I get the cert
I could do better, but boy, am I glad I dropped out.

that makes more sense
I went to a smaller school and CS was the same thing as software engineering. It was a little of both.

First of all, the curriculum of computer science and software engineering is different with every school. Secondly, some colleges' computer science course leans more towards software engineering discipline. Finally, what about the computer science curriculum makes it more "complete". What is "completeness"? At the end of the day, if the goal of a student is to be productive in industry as opposed to learning CS for the sake of intellectual masturbation, then software engineering would be an optimal choice.

And I didn't even mention the smaller companies (zulilly that got bought by Nordstrom, marchex in downtown, Tableau) and then the other large non-tech companies with decent IT departments - using that term loosely, includes developers (Nordstrom, Starbucks, REI).

...

Who laffn naw bitch

What is the depth of the average software engineering student? I assume it's more than fruity project organization design, but they don't go into theory as much.

I actually feel bad for him. Seven years (he took two extra semesters) to get a job, he could have had with a three year degree. Plus he would have been making at least a bit more.

They are going to shit on you.

I know. It already smells, I hear their gross language every time they talk to one another, and I can smell their disgusting food from a mile away.

The meme is that all you need to succeed is a degree.
If you go to a good school, know the material well, practice a lot, do projects, get internships, etc. you'll do well.
Basically you have to put in more than the minimum required effort.

IT is for pajeets though

That's what I have always been preaching, programs that are focused on industry are the red pill, while intellectual masturbation is the blue pill because once the graduates get into industry they are forced to take the red pill in order to survive. All non-STEM programs are definitely the latter.

>tfw going for automation and eletrical industrial engineering

Am gonna get memed?

Kek. I work at a major hosting company, and we host servers for our indian departments. Everytime they needed help, they didn't understand anything we said. So no we have an indian support group here in Denmark that pass all indian calls to. It's fucking bizzaro world.

And their food fucking stink like shit.

is IT an in-demand field in Denmark? I really wanted to work there. Do you guys speak mostly Danish or English? How many of you speak German?

>Do you guys speak mostly Danish or English?
Oh, burger.

Yes if you are a specialized technician.
We speak english pretty well, though it often sounds like we got a potato stuck in our mouth. And german is usually the third language we are taught along with english, but people don't really keep that up to date after school.

no, EE field is pretty much clear of Pajeets.

Computer science is a great field, it just depends on whether you're willing to travel.

I know at least three guys I graduated high school with who are making a killing. One of them works to the bone, though, so I guess it's a half-meme. Just need to find a good place I guess.

I studied political sciences and end up working in my uni library.

...

It's not like university is hard work, so he honestly can't complain. Even in most stem fields people don't do more than 20 hours of work a week.

Will i have work?
Will i destroy workplaces?

don't know for spain, but in NL you are pretty much guaranteed regardless of your grades

Noice.
I already have studies (CFGS AKA EGF5 on mobile apps plus 5+ projects), so it is as an extra. Plus i want to eventually get a doctorate.

Truth is, landing a good job is very much a matter of being in the right place at the right time; call it luck, destiny, randomness, whatever. Having a degree increases your chances of actually landind it when opportunity is given, but is of no value by itself, other than love of knowledge.

"Ability is nothing without opportunity."
Napoleon

>infrastructure arch
Not a meme in the Boston-Metro area either.

seattle is turning into a toilet with the "homeless friendly" government. at least pajeet washes his hands & ass after shitting in the street. homeless just pull down their pants & shit and pull them back up.

It's still a waste if you could earn a lot more from the experience you could have required in those four years. Especially when you end up with a job way below your educational level.
