That's kind of the thing that separates adults from children. Children view things in terms of right and wrong. They think that a "bad person" deserves death. They see some stupid Disney movie and they think that the bad character deserves to die in the end. That's not how things work in reality. Police officers, at least in theory, should try to take everyone into custody with the least amount of force necessary. They should try to keep the peace.

No it's not illegal, there's many cases of people who have defended their households with a gun, sometimes even killing the attacker, and nothing happens to them.
