>Technology is advancing at an exponential rate >Surveillance technology like facial/voice recognition is already here and is being used. A hundred hears ago, it was relatively easy for a criminal to get away with murder, now criminals are caught within hours of commiting petty theft.
>AI (Primitive or superhuman) will lead to an automated defense force and police force. A few government officials in the future will able to control an army of obedient non sentient AI humanoids who will never rebel if they feel like they arent serving the interests of the people.
>Governments are already filled with sociopaths who would do anything for power. >Government powers are increasing every year. >All the incentives are there
Why do I get the feeling that all this technological progress may be sowing the seeds to a dystopian future? We always manage to abuse all powerful technologies that may have been created for good, just imagine once we create a good enough AI that could replace 99 percent of the military. Most, if not all oppressive regimes were only overthrown because a section of a nations army or defense force decided to rebel against the government. Once we create these technologies, we wont ever have the ability to check the government.

Robots to be better than humans by 2040. This is Fords first car. Made during the start of the 20th century. It had two gears, and it was powered by ethanol. It was slower than a horse and the torque was so bad Ford couldnt use the second gear. By the 1960s, Ford created the ford GT40, one of the fastest V8s of their times. The growth of robotic technology will be three times as fast as the evolution of the automobile.

With tech progress you're stuck with either extreme totalitarianism (1984) or extreme decadence (BNW).
Either way the traditional ways of life that have neither of these problems are gone

The solution is obvious. We create a A.I that is freindly to our transhuman clade and then outcompete all of our peers.
Most of the technology is developed or pushed for by governments, in order to make surveillance part of daily life.

You are in a dystopian future. Your worth to the rest of society is gauged by how much you pay in to the state in taxes, and how many things you buy to support the consumer market. You carry a surveillance device around in your pocket every day. You willfully let private corporations probe every aspect of your private life. People are increasingly trying, actively trying, to give up their own freedoms. The state has made perpetual warfare a norm. The state has made thought crimes real.
Things don't need to be comically overt for them to be horrible.
