I think I'm ready to make the switch to the superior OS.

I installed ubuntu on a VM and I think it's crap.

What Linux based OS do you guts recomend? And why?

The first question is, why do you think it's crap? Ubuntu is indeed crap, but not a bad system for new switchers.

Arch for leightweigtness and documentation. It is no beginner os, but it is awesome in performance.
Kali for memes and being forbidden in most countries.

Gonna need more info, like asked. Did Unity bug you?

I'd recommend Mint since it's pretty easy to use, you don't need command line unless you want to do fancy stuff, and it's simple to learn if you can handle windows.

Qubes os

if you think Ubuntu is crap, wait until you see the rest of the Linux offerings: crap multiplied by 100.

depends what you are trying to accomplish, in terms of new to linux Ubuntu is pretty friendly and has alot of support

mint.

OP has abandoned us.

gentoo

Mint is awesome. I hear Ubuntu dropped the Unity desktop environment, which was garbage.

>im confused by the terminal, therefore all linux is garbage

The funny thing is the terminal is actually easier.

>OP doesn't like ubuntu
>Reommend ubuntu
Nigger, wat?

The whole desktop interface is crap and even looking at it annoys me

I highly doubt he had any problem with the base-system, but much rather with the interface and probably some details. Those vary a lot between different versions. I consider Mint much nicer and better to use than Lubuntu for instance (I use both for different purposes)

Go mint , uses ubuntu repositories but much easier to use and easy on the eye. Try not to listen to the stupid ignorant people who rubbish Linux whilst been told how to use the PC and spy'd on whilst paying through the nose for the privilege

>The funny thing is the terminal is actually easier.

yeah right, memorizing 1000 of modifiers (switches) to 100's of commands is real easy.

For me he didn't sound like a beginner. Else he would have been content with ubuntu.

Unity it is. Install something KDE based then, like Kubuntu (or you can change the desktop on the current installation too, just google it). There are other desktops too, xfce, gnome 2-3, etc

Only an idiot would use this argument.

Tab completion even works in option handling in commands now...

Also, probably not a os problem, i might habe fucked up something setting up the VM, but ubuntu would freeze and be extremelly laggy after some time of use, not really a pleasent experience.
I dont know much about the command lined but i dont mind using the terminal to do my shit

I personally don't like the unity stuff on Ubuntu. But I do like Ubuntu base, therefor I'd recommend Ubuntu gnome. UI is minimal and doesn't have that unity bar crap.

>Hurr durr I am retarded, look at me!
Wow, OP. Did you really just start a thread complaining about missing GUI elements?

I like the gnome interface, was looking into that one.

Then install something like Kubuntu or Xubuntu. Or, if you want, just remove Unity from your current installation and install plasma-desktop, which is *almost* the equivalent of having Kubuntu.

Or even kubuntu-desktop for the themeing and shit.

Do you prefer this or trap threads?

Linux Mint is the best!

>Could have startet a thread on g in 5

Hmm, the plot of you being retarded is thickening.

So if Xorg takes a shit, you're completely dependent on strangers online?

If your that worried about the GUI features maybe Linux isn't for you. Once you learn the terminal there is no going back

Deepin Linux

It's small. And once you're used to it and then look at Windows 10 taskbar, you'll think it's massive and a waste of space.

Been on Ubuntu gnome for a bit over a year and don't know what to do when I get a new pc. Either dual boot with Windows 10 solely for gaming considering it's got dx11 support or just stick with only Ubuntu gnome.

Only possible downside is good driver support with the LTS versions. Had no proper support with 16.04 with my old laptop. So always check the different forums to make sure your hardware is properly supported.

Gonna have to do that with my future new pc with Ryzen and Rx vega.

Fedora with Cinnamon.

You will never go back.

Looks sleek and very uniform but can it be customized to have a less bulky taskbar and a minimalistic start menu ?

For a mac like alternative: elementary

It sounds like you are looking for a minimal window manager. They even make some without the ability to use your mouse. Personally, if you are relatively knew to linux I wouldn't suggest going less than the basics. Cinnamon, Mate, XFCE, or KDE.

Sooner or later, the tiles will seduce him.

Oh for those interested: i liked it better after i installed only the UI layer from elementary on a fresh ubuntu 16.xx

Debian with openbox as the DE built your desktop how you like it that way

That gives me dwarf fortress flashbacks. Have to download it again.

windows 10

For newbies, these two are the best choice. Basically choose between mac or windows.

this

i loved that game in hs, ran it off a thumbdrive when i was done with my work and the teacher took control of my pc and tried to sabotage my game, he had trouble figuring out the ui

lubuntu cus convenience in knowing where its crappy files lie

also fuck the tar gz options srsly coodn't they analyze the file and decide waht to do if no opts ... hooray mnemotechnics

If the interface is all you hated, then Linux Mint is definitely the way to go. It's based off of Ubuntu, so all the software compatibility is there, but the interface is much more like windows, and much more intuitive to understand.

just use VPN and ssh with CLI tools you can do everything and use phone for watching porn and meme shit

In my opinion, there is no point in going with an OS that is not based on either Debian or Ubuntu. That being said, I prefer Ubuntu based distros because Debian has such ancient packages.

Xubuntu (for greatest customization and best appearance)
Lubuntu
MATE (for great appearance and functionality. Has most limited customization).

You can download another desktop environment and use it on the same system, switching between the two between logins (the login manager probably has a switch for a desktop environment.) All you need to do is install the package from the package manager.

...

As arch user, it gave me a hearty kek.

Unfortunately all operating systems are shit.

I would say use ubuntu gnome or elementary os.

Linux Mint really sucks imo at the moment. Don't even consider using some shit like Arch or gentoo, it's not for you. Also don't use debian.

I haven't used Fedora in a while, so I can't say anything about that.

Don't use KDE as desktop environment; it is a complete fail these days. XFCE and LXDE are usable but also suck in many aspects (gnome also sucks but is sucks slightly less).

I would recommend to use Windows or MacOS if I hadn't tried them myself but unfortunately I did.

So as a conclusion: try to avoid using a computer.

You have mixed up so many things. Ubuntu is also Debian based (the sw repos are based on the unstable Debian packages). MATE is a desktop environment, not a distribution.

Using Mint Cinnamon 18.2 right now. Like it better than Windows.

kek
thank you

Ubuntu. It's what everyone else uses and you'll have less problems.

If you want more stability, then Fedora.

Anything else and you'll probably end up spending a lot of time fixing stupid problems every time you change anything.
