Well there was no great call for independence in Hong Kong, it was just a deal to line the pockets of the UK government to increase socialist schemes in Britain. Hong Kong was a bastion of capitalism in China and a completely separate nation, Hong Kong being Cantonese whilst mainland China is Mandarin. Even to this day there are protesters wanting Hong Kong to rejoin the commonwealth.
