It's a manga that's been running for 20+ years now, and it's pretty incredible. One of the things that's most interesting about it, is that the author has basically reinvented himself in his style several times throughout the series, while still keeping it true to its roots. During the first 10 volumes (referred to collectively as the "Golden Age" arc), it's basically gritty 80s style manga of purely dark medieval warfare, becoming borderlined historical fiction. but in volumes 11-12+ literally hell opens up and pours itself onto earth evil dead style but in a completely serious manner. Over the next ~5 volumes you have every bit of bad in his world corrupted and risen to full blown demonic rape-fests; corrupt priests burning everyone at the stake, packs of roving goblins kidnapping women, raping and impregnating them to make more monsters, an evil god-emporer who tries to take over the world etc. It then turns into a traditional swords/sorcery fantasy where Guts assembles a team of rag-tag heroes to destroy the five God Hands of hell, one of whom was his best friend and rival during the Golden Age.

berserk lost its touch 15 years ago, the story is still amazing, but the dark and unexplained uneasiness you felt when reading it is long gone.

yeah it's a real shame, the polished artwork compared to the robust and wavering old one is really ruining it for me, its a very minor detail but feels so different. the story is really advancing and is great, but is really lacking the feeling of "berserk", guts having friends and somewhere to turn his hopes to is a new feeling in berserk

I don't understand how it's supposed to be done well enough to teach it, as it turns out.
I agree on the polished artwork, I have the same opinion of animation style. I think early 2000s animation style looks better than what's current now. Less polished, more raw and striking.
The new Band of the Hawks is questionable in my opinion. I like the characters, but it's doesn't seem right.
Although Guts being a father figure to Schierke was very touching, the anime did it extremely well.

It's like Miura's creativity was lost at sea as soon as they set sail for fail with captain Chad. Really enjoyed this sequence here, along with the later Guts and Zodd duo fighting the Kushans.
Speaking of Guts and Zodd, does anyone else see the resemblance? They're both the only characters with pronounced canines and spiky black hair. My theory is Guts' birth mother was raped by Zodd.

That's a theory I've heard some people talk about, that Guts is related to Zodd one way or another.
Also trying to relate Guts with Skull Knight, given the Berserker armor and how they both stand up against the God Hand.
