It's not as romantic as it seems these days. Most engines are nasty and smell like piss. Some of them ride like a bucking bull. Management harass us constantly in an effort to justify their jobs. Computers do the dispatching and engineers have to run based on computer prompts for fuel conservation. Once PTC comes on, things will change forever.

Honestly I got lucky by enjoying programming. I just have a huge interest in it so I was able to stay focused and learn new things.

I really learned everything by just googling stuff, never one specific place. I started making games in Java and just tried harder and harder games until I got into other kinds of programming. I would say just make projects you enjoy and the skill will come through that. Don't just follow bullshit tutorials, make something you want no matter how small it is and keep improving with harder things.

One key to getting a real job is having projects to show for it, real completed projects. I got my first programming job at 18 because I had made successful Android games. Real experience through creating things is way more than a college degree will get you.

As for a specific language, there is no one language fits all you have to choose the right tool for the job. Once you learn one language you can pick up others easily.

You wanna brag about your job. That's cool, good for you buddy.

Sorry its real m8. I worked hard to get where I am. Just because you jerk off in your moms basement at 31 doesn't mean everyone else does. Though I wish I lived with my parents some times, my fucking rent costs $1,700 a month and I'm ready to buy a place, fucking renting is a scam.

45, male, coal train driver, $130,000 a year.

Damn sorry to hear that. Childhood dreams, ruined.

That actually sounds like a pretty decent gig. I don't know a fuck ton about conversion rates between USD and AUD, but I do know that several things there cost nearly twice as much as here. However, that vacation time is nothing to scoff at. After 4 years at my previous employment I was allowed to start accruing an extra hour per week worked towards vacation time up to a max of 4 weeks starting from 40h.

Cheers mate. Appreciate the response.

This is bullshit. One day you will realize how large of a knowledge gap you have. You will literally feel like shit. Learning by just googling stuff and building what you want will not cut it. Get at least a nanodegree or a mentor. Spend time with people who know what the fuck are talking about.

It works out to be about $103k per annum in US dollars. 1 AUD $ = US $0.794
It is a pretty sweet job. The worst part is the shift work, there is no consistency. About half the people who get the jpb leave within a year. We can accrue up to 400 hours annual leave (10 weeks) before they start getting pissy about taking it. We also get long service leave, if you stay with the same employer for 10 years you get 13 weeks leave, every 10 years you get another 13 weeks and you can accrue it indefinitely. If I retire at 64 I will have 52 weeks long service leave accrued.... a whole year of getting paid for nothing without eating into retirement savings!

Sorry man I known more than every programmer I have met. The ones who learn in college don't know how to learn on their own so when they are in the real world they are fucked. Maybe back in the day college worked out, but now its just a waste of money.

My coworkers who have been out of college for years come to me for answers, not just at my current job but at all of them. People just suck, I got ahead because I'm actually interested in programming and not an idiot.

Understandable, how is it being a female in the IT world? I have to say I haven't worked with any during my time though I'm only 22, they are very rare. Is it as bad as the feminists make it out to be?

Haha I mean I don't think I'm a super genius I have just been programming for a lot longer than everyone one I have met despite my age. I'm a fucking retard when it comes to anything other than computers and the logical side of things.

Being a successful software engineering is not about "programming" or even "the logical side of things". You'll probably figure that out when you'll grow some pubic hair.
