That depends. Free trade works when value exists and government subsidies don't. Problem is we are trading in worthless currency that has no value and governments all over the world subsidize their pet businesses.
A business operating in the free market cannot compete with a business that is given free money by a government unless it's astronomically efficient. You might say "aha but that's not a problem! Cheaper goods for everyone" but it doesn't work like that. If you develop economic dependence on imports and don't balance that with exports, you're going to get so fucked it's not funny.
That's the problem with the free market. It works if everyone participates. Two free market countries with no government subsidies on anything can trade with no restrictions. On the other hand, when you have a relationship like the other country can export to you with no restrictions and if you export to them you're subject to massive tariffs.. then that's fucked up.
You're going to lose and get turned into a nation of panhandlers. Simple as that.
