In the US, left-leaning people think that their position is a matter of intelligence rather than ideology. By and large they are convinced that liberal ideology is the only choice for people as intellectually superior as they are, and that the political right is entirely the product of ignorant people who are lesser than them. The result of this is that normal, free thinking observers see liberals as sneering, elitist pricks. Which they typically are.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand mass shootings.
