oldtimefags in a nutshell

Now, correct me if I'm wrong on this one because you might be from another country but a clinical psychologist will complete their undergraduate degree. Let's just say 4 years. Then the clin psych programs (PhD, not that psy D bullshit) run for 6-7 years. Part of it is clinically oriented and part of it is research oriented with helps lend it the differentiating factor between the psyD and PhD. So we are looking at about 11 years of college in total as being the average. If you're 25 years old that means you started at 13/14. However, it's also important to note most clinical psychologists are salaried pretty low and build their way up to 100k despite what BLS says since I'm familiar with that field. Jobs are also harder to come by.

What I'm saying is... this is extremely unlikely. Plus on graduation there tends to be a 2 year residency on top of that so 13 years of college in total. That's excluding time between programs and any sub-specialties like peds or burn victims.

So, do you have a PsyD, come from another country or started college as early as 11 on a fast track and got a lucky job placement? I'm in medicine and have a friend in clinical psych. I scored high enough for the field but transferred to medicine instead he went to clin psych.

I'm a clinical psychologist myself. I'm 33 and earn ~$190k. In Aus it takes 8yrs as a minimum to become a clin psych (4yr undergrad, 2yr postgrad and 2yr residency). He could be from a country with a similar pathway and could have started uni at the age of 17. Entirely plausible.

Everyone lies about how long they've been here.

That's why I was wondering if another country potentially. That's a different path than the ones I usually see in America and might answer that. Plus it's a different market there too.

Over here in some places being a clinical psychologist isn't as fast or advantageous. Long term the bet is better with psychiatry even with school debt. Clin psych PhD programs here tend to be free but don't pay a ton.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

yeah okay kid keep dreaming

the clinical psychologist one is fine, though his age is too young

18-22 -> undergrad
22-24 -> masters
24-28 -> phd/training
then you're a clinical psychologist starting at 80-100k

that salary and job is more typical of someone who is 35

wow Canada pays much less than that. What do other branches of psych pay in Oz?

Thats because the health care system in the US unfortunately is crap. Here we have Medicare which significantly subsidises sessions. This makes treatment and management of mental health issues significantly more affordable and accessible to the public.

Medicare only subsidises for genelist psychs and clinical psychs. The amount is higher for clinical psychs. All other specialities get subsidised the same as a generalist. As such a clinical psych is better able to venture into private practice. The average for another specialist (eg forensic etc.) in an organization would be ~90-100k. You can move up the ranks and potentially earn ~$140k eventually.

I work in a small town, the pay is much better therefore. It's why I moved from the city.

Yeah. I'd have gone in that field and not medicine which to me is more roundabout thing although I will have a much more encompassing knowledge base IMO. My deal was medicine and keep psych as an option to get the pay in our broken system while keeping interest.

That's non-invasive. Whoever told you that rate in where I'm guessing you live, probably the US. Is seriously misguided.

A lot of people ask me that. It's inevitable that you'll take your work home. It's nothing unique to this field. It is however about how you take it on. It's important to know your limits as a clinician, that you can't 'fix' everyone and at the end of the day the onus is on the person to change. You are simply their 'guide', a voice of reason and at times the devils advocate. The pressure that some clinicians experience is often self inflicted in that they view it as their responsibility and duty to cure the patient for them. The patient has to take that responsibility because you can't run their life. Of course there will be times when you feel frustrated and helpless, but there are many more rewarding times, when you see the all positive changes in the patients lives. That is what recharges me.
