Japan is ranked quite low in terms of an all around great place to live.
The US is 5th, Canada 2nd and Australia 1st. Sweden is 3rd I believe? Japan is Like in the 1p's or 20's. I'll try and find a link to the organization that rates countries on various points. (Safety, healthcare, GDP, happiness, recreation etc.)

Only reason for the low crime has to do with the fact that if a crime is committed they arrest the first person they think did it and interrogate for 48-72 hours until they force a confession. They have a 99% convict rate which many believe over 50% are falsely accused. People fear that you can be pulled out of your bed and sent to jail because that is what happens. It's not a great system in place. It's constant fear that just the thought that you could commit a crime usually is that is needed to find you guilty.
