There was literally no dispute between benders and non benders.
If you were born a bender you trained to master your element.
If you weren't you trained to master your weapon of choice.

Yeah I remember that it started out pretty horrible. It gets a bit better in the later seasons but it still can't live up to the original.

I own that shit. I bought the last Airbender and the legend of korra on DVD a while ago. It course I binge the last Airbender, but I've only been able to suffer though two seasons on korra. It really is disappointing.
The only good thing to come out of Korra is the porn.

In my opinion, season 2 is even worse, but it gets better.
I enjoyed seasons 3 and 4 a lot.
They are different philosophivally anc characters change and become more likeable, along with the new characters.
Korra and Asami are cannon actually.
In the comic Turf wars part 1 they actually kiss and do their version of "coming out". I guess this is somewhat of a spoiler.

Considering if you look at the Fire Nation in the Avatar they were using iron clad ships, if anything, they were at the very end of the enlightened period (roughly 1860). Aang lived for another 40 or so years after and korra is about 19, so its been almost 50-60 years since, so its about 1910 times in republic city, hence why automobiles and planes are making an appearance

Northern Air Temple is in the Earth Kingdom

He didn't build an industrial nation, something had to be done with the former Fire Kingdom Colonies that were on the Earth Kingdom continent, as they weren't really fire nation or earth kingdom, so he founded a council republic based off of classical liberalism (fire nation kinda being like the British Empire, and the Republic kinda like America, Aang was kinda like George Washington in a kinda twisted metaphor, in fact, you could spin all of the original avatar as a metaphor for the American Revolution.) The industrialization was just a side effect of huge boost in personal freedoms.

This is probably a side effect of Republic City being a very bender-diverse city, where people of non-benders could be free from oppressive governments that used bending as a way to oppress even other benders. Equality breeds inequality, and freedom makes a man live in a cage.
