Not saying that this is the ultimate rebuttal, but one would have to be a major fuck up to squander away all the wealth of the arabian peninsula, the former Sassanid Empire and the richest provinces of the Byzantine/Easter Roman Empire. With the insane prosperity those lands brought the islamic empire, coupled with the wealth brought home from raiding and demanding tribute from neighboring states there is no wonder that the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphate was an extremely rich place to rule.

The Umayyad's turned Iberia into the wealthiest part of Europe too because they had the foresight to expand trade across the Mediterranean. Cordoba grew to 10 x the population of London and had a lot of public utilities.

Byzantium had been in a 200 year on and off civil war before the Ottoman's took Constantinople. It was the Ottomans that restored Anatolia to stability and prosperity.

I'm not arguing against that. What I pointed out was that your argument was kinda flawed as the Umayyad and the Abbasid caliphates sat on immense wealth from a very early period of the muslim conquests.

Umayyads and Ottomans weren't introduced to civilization upon contacting Europe. They built tremendously upon it. Ottomans were the ones that fixed Anatolia and Iberia was fairly backwards before the Umayyads brought it into Mediterranean trade. prosperity was about stability and trade which is what the Caliphates in these times were good at. Minorities were given general autonomy to run their own communities so they were typically content.

Meanwhile, Charlemagne was rampaging through northern Europe and the vikings were pillaging the coasts. It was quite good under these Caliphates in comparison to what was happening in Europe during this era.

At the end of the day, pol wants to find any excuse that Islam ruined everything but it's not true. Today's issues are different to the past issues.
