Or B) Naval blockade to attempt to starve the Japanese out. Seeing as how they didn't surrender after the FIRST atomic bomb was dropped on a city, they probably would have all let themselves die of hunger before surrendering.
It was literally the option which caused the least death, on both sides. It also prevented Russia from invading and enslaving the north half of Japan and then we have a scenario like Vietnam. Only it's way worse than Vietnam, because its right after the war, and right after we just lost another ~500,000k troops, more than we lost on the European front.
