We used to call them gales (with hurricane force winds)
Also it's kind of a thing for hurricanes that hit the East coast of America to end up as heavy rain in Britain but they're not still hurricanes by then.
Also we get more tornadoes per square mile than the US, but The British Isles are quite small so that's not much of a thing.

I'm in Swansea, about half a mile in from the sea. When I went outside just now the sea was loud and I could smell something, possibly ozone and flint.
