So I got an email from my ISP saying I illegally downloaded some porn using Bittorrent
Video: Birthday Boy Gets A Treat
Company: MG Content DP Limited
It says they want a 198$ settlement before a deadline or they will seek litigation.
>lawsuit up to $5000 because Canada
The thing is, I don't use Bittorrent and I only saw/streamed the video for the first time since googling the title after receiving the email.
>not bad
Now I've had the same wifi password for 3 years and some friends who aren't exactly buddy buddy with me anymore to say the least. So I immediately thought that this was their doing, some kind of 'fuck you' in prank form. Needles to say, my wifi has since been strengthened.
I've also considered the possibility that it's a phishing scam but the time of the disputed download matches up perfectly to the time my one douche of a friend was in town.
>from my ISP fake, ignore. your ISP provides data. the rights holders sue.
Landon Carter
Peer 2 peer is legal in canada. Torrent all ypu want you bitch ass bitch.
Connor Wright
thx for reply
lol I used Utorrent wayyyy back in the day for old games, haven't ever got it again since I got Steam

If you are from canada then they basically cant do shit. They send those emails basically to brow beat you into paying out of court. If you tell them to eat shit nothing will happen. In canada they can only sue you for the value what you downloaded, so for a shitty porno lets say 30 bucks. So if they take you to court they are going to have to pay a lawyer to take it to court. These are money making enterprises, they are not going to risk loosing it by taking you to court

I would just remove that mail and go about my day as usual. Unless someone actually knocks at your door or leaves a written official letter in your door you can ignore these scare mails and potential scammers.
Cooper Gomez
Its not legal but there are no laws making it a criminal or civil offence.
Jeremiah Gray
This is essentially what I gathered after reading into it
Yea this seems to make the most sense
Eli Hughes
The laws in canada are, aparently, supposed to deter people who seed huge ammounts of pirated content
Parker Diaz
could they not sue for lawyer and attorney fees if they choose to take it to court?
James Cook
Send them a picture of a spider valued at $198 that should settle the matter in full
Samuel Taylor
ignore it. they want you to admit to doing it so they can go after you. it would cost them more money to take you to court.
Jaxon Price
Sure but thats assuming they win. The really big reason why they never sue is because the burden of proof lies with the plaintiff (the people who filed the law suit). Its widely accepted that the proof the copyright trolls are using is deeply flawed. If they try and sue somebody, then loose, there will at that point be case law supporting the defendants making any future litigation extremely difficult for the copyright trolls.

Why would your isp care if you stole porn from some degenerates?
And how would MG content DP Limited convince your isp to investigate one shitty porno downloaded when $10,000s worth of shit is downloaded every day
Sounds like a scam
Adam Green
Tell them why they have it wrong and then tell them to bring it on and you'll counter sue for $50K for malicious prosecution and civil fraud. They will go away.
Zachary Bennett
I've considered something along this line
However, they don't know anything other than an IP atm and contacting them will direct them to personal information
Asher Hughes
The way it works is the copyright troll monitors the torrent, track your IP to your ISP and send a copyright complaint. Your ISP forwards the complaint to you. But the complaint is not supposed to contain demands for money. The copyright trolls demand money because they count on people not arguing it and giving them money.
Charles Kelly
Shit I just told them to eat a dick and they went away
William Rogers
ISP won't email you about that, they don't own porn just provide internet service.
