So I'm thinking of going travelling in America next year. I want to buy a car and do big road trips across America.
Can the Americans of Sup Forums give me any advice? i.e. costs associated with driving a car, insurance, places to sleep (can you just sleep in the car in walmart?)
Thanks so much in advance, not bait I'm genuinely looking for some help

21 btw

I don't know shit about cars, but you can sleep in Hostels that are A LOT cheaper than hotels. They're co-ed and have a pretty chill environment. Highly recommended.

Thanks user. Is there any like popular hostel chains? Or just a case of a google search?

pic related is my trip hopefully

Buying a car can be a gamble, you don't want to spend too much but you don't want to break down all the time. Im not sure how you could register it being a foreigner and all. Remember, we drive on the right side of the road. You can sleep in your car but make sure you haven't been drinking in case a police officer woke you up because you can get a DUI for just being in your car while drunk.

Your best bet would be to google where you plan to stay.

>San Antonio
Oh shit son. Hope you enjoy my hometown.

Thanks user for this advice. I didn't realise that about drinking and then sleeping in your car! Am trying to research into car registering, insurance etc for a foreigner but it's all very vague online

Stay off our roads. We have enough foreigners in this country who can't drive worth shit.

>Your best bet would be to google where you plan to stay.
Thanks

>Oh shit son. Hope you enjoy my hometown.
Lol why's this? What's it like there?

I'm not some shit driver user, I've driven a lot on the right hand side in Europe, I know it's not quite the same I expect, but yea.

It's humid and warm most of the year.
Some sides of town are pretty shit to be on, so don't try to stay out too late. (usually the East side or West side; South side is pretty chill at night)

ALSO. I HIGHLY recommend trying Whataburger and Bill Millers BBQ while you're in Texas. It's damn good food my dude.

Thanks user
Where you at now? Or still in hometown?

Anyone have any ideas on the cost of running a cost, i.e. car insurance for 21 year old, also things like tax etc

Yeah. Born and raised. I'm a bit of a hermit, so I don't go out much.

Ha thanks I'll add that to my list of places to visit.

Oh I'm a bit of a hermit too so quite happy to live in car most of the time

BUMP

National forest campgrounds are the best place to spend a night if you're on a budget. Most of them(at least where I live in Michigan anyway) have cheap campsites and even free "walk-in" sites where you park your car in the parking lot and hike about a half mile to the campsite deep in the woods. They're generally cleaner than State campgrounds, which are also packed with people "camping" in their huge RVs.

if only we had a board for travel that really would be neat

Thank you user. I'm going to do some research into this now.
Any places you suggest to visit in Michigan?

OP: Having a few foreign friends that have come over to visit, the first thing you need to be aware of. This country is HUGE! If you're on a schedule, you will get behind simply because of the distances.

As for buying a car, it depends on what you want to buy. New? Nobody will give you a loan, so you're going to have to pay out right. Used? Same, no loan. If you buy a $2000 shitbox, you won't make it without some sort of failure.
Insurance? Without permanent residency, good luck getting a policy. If you do end up somehow, $200/mo for full coverage.

OP would be better off touring via Amtrak

My nigga.

Yep, instead you have to scroll through pages of sicko furry/incest garbage to find anything decent on Sup Forums.

Skip Detroit. Stop off in Alaska or better yet Hawaii instead.

Fuck Whataburger, it's nasty Burger King without the sesame seeds

OP here, thanks for reply user.
Yeah it's kinda crazy the distances over there, this roadtrip I was looking at and it's like 10,000 miles!
Okay so I have a friend who would give me their car to use, and it's a really nice car, so that's not an issue, but what about $200/mo for full coverage... that's kinda crazy! Do you have policies for just say, third party only over there? Also what company would that be with? So I can look at some quotes myself
Thanks

What's up? Lol

Burger King is fucking garbage dude.
Small ass burgers for like $4.
Whataburger may be expensive but you quality food.

>Skip Detroit.
Is Detroit kind of a no go then? Haha

>touring via Amtrak
Also good suggestion
Researching Amtrak now

...

Depending on the length of your trip, generally speaking, if you're going under 3 months, it's cheaper to do a long term rental car. You will also have to obtain an international driving permit before you come here, talk to your local travel bureau or embassy.

If you don't have permanent residency, good luck getting a quote. It may be better that if your friend is borrowing his car, that he put you on his policy.

As for Detroit, do you want to be "Culturally Enriched"?

If you have insurance you're covered. Make sure the policy is good for foreign travel. I've driven all over Europe and the UK without extra insurance but we rented cars.

Thanks, my dude.
I was hoping to go for say a year long trip, and my friend owns the car so would just be using this.

>If you don't have permanent residency, good luck getting a quote.
You arent the first to say that here, so this worries me... :-(

>If you have insurance you're covered.
I would be using my own car over there, so I think I would need seperate insurance for in USA

Only in your wet dreams donald

Here's a great website that has all the coolest tourist attractions.

roadsideamerica.com/

Do I-10 from Florida to California. The best food is near l-10.

see mate the thing about the states is that you can travel almost for free anywhere in the country as long as your mouth is open for what Americans call "shrimp on the barbie" (sucking cock and balls to completion in exchange for passage in a vehicle)

Many Wal-Mart's let you sleep in their parking lots. Its what I did, just be mindful what parts of town those Wal-Mart's are; which cities they are in and the percentages of niggers and spics within those areas and cities. I chose a bad spot ine time and a Wal-Mart security guy parked in front of me the whole night with his lights in.

Thanks a lot for the link dude, any more things you could send?

MURICAN knowledge at his best indeed
thetruesize.com

you've got to try Kruez's market in lockhart tx. best BBQ ever

My advice, don't be black

Ooooo is I-10 like a motorway I'm guessing?

Liability insurance for a 21 year old will be about 70-80 dollars a month at worst. Its been a long time since I was that young, but I vaguely remember being excited when I turned 26 because my liability insurance dropped to 260 dollars every 6 months.

You will only pay tax on a car if you buy it from a dealership. In that case, the tax is rolled into the final cost (tax, title transfer, destination fee, are all extra and will vary greatly between states and even dealerships)

>thetruesize.com
Nice site, my bro

The Upper Peninsula has a lot of remote wilderness, the best of which is Isle Royale in Lake Superior. The pictured rocks, taquamenom falls, and copper harbor are also neat places to go. My personal favorite place is Presque Isle State park. It's just a very relaxing place to go, look it up and you might see what I mean.

The lower peninsula is much more industrial, if you like cars you should probably go to the Henry Ford museum.

It's not in Michigan, but one of my favorite places to go is the US Air Force museum in Dayton, Ohio. There are 4 huge hangers full of planes from different eras including experimental planes, WW2 era, and even some ICBMs. I've been to that place 4 times and I really enjoy it.

you pay tax when you xfer the title, numbnutz

Will do thanks user

Lol I'm total white, no black in me

>Without permanent residency, good luck getting a policy

Insurance companies by law must insure any car. Think of it like this, we have 13 million illegals in this country and they all drive. The only thing an insurance company will ask for is your drivers license number, home address, and vehicle information.

Thanks user. In the UK at 21 your looking at about £2k a year for the car I will drive, but even the same vehicle in Europe is about £350 lol. UK insurance is a joke.
Thanks for your advice user.
What insurance companies should I have a look at? Any you can name please?

Cheers user, I'm gonna look into these places and definitely take a visit. :-)

>pic related
Presque Isle State park, looks cool as fuck

Fuck. Only if you want gang jumped and your car striped. Place went to shit years ago.

You should look into renting an RV.
cruiseamerica.com/

That's good idea user, but I am hoping to travel for maybe a year, but I will still look into this for parts of my trip.

You can sleep in any walmart parking lot anywhere in the US. They will never kick you out. It's actually walmart policy. It's actually not bad. It's well lit and there are generally cameras, so no one's going to fuck with you. I don't know EXACTLY why it's company policy, but I figure it has something to do luring truckers or travelers to buy shit. I've slept in plenty Wal-mart parking lots, and have found myself going in to buy water or produce or whatever.

That being said, Walmart is a good safe place anywhere you go, but state or national parks are better. I'd actually prefer pitching a tent in any local campsite. I've slept in a lot of state parks for free. They generally have 5-10$ a night fees, but if you leave early enough no one is taking down your tag number. The same for KOAs, which is kind of a chain campground across the US. Show up late,
leave early, and its a free place to sleep.
KOAs also have showers, but you're paying for that. If you're in a sketch town, don't go to the random local campsite. Go to the walmart, or better the KOA (not that all towns have those.) If you're in a weird town without a safe place, keep going. In the middle of nowhere US, you can pull onto a side road, drive for ten minutes, pull off into the bush, sleep in your car, and no one will find you.

Bring a lot of resources. Water, so much water, through the southern, especially south-west US. I don't know about specific roads you're taking (since I didn't look at your map) but if you're going route 66 or through death valley, you can go 100 miles without a fill station, so gas up and have plenty of water.

Progressive, Geico, State Farm, Farmers, Allstate, eSurance....

You might be ok if your nigger but still get robbed and mugged

>As for Detroit, do you want to be "Culturally Enriched"?

Actually, now that I see your map, I'm sure you're trolling. You're going to just happen through Little Rock, AR, then OKC, OK, then fucking San Antonio?!? Are you fucking mad?

Those are three shit places you fucking don't want to go, and you're going to waste 30 hours on that bullshit?

You're fucking bonkers.

Go to some of the nice charter towns by the great lakes. All of fun of the ocean without any of the awful.

ARE YOU JUST GOING THROUGH EVERY CAPITAL? YOU FUCKING SADIST. YOU MUST BE FUCKIN SO ILL-INFORMED ON THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE. JESUS. FUCK.

No I'm not trolling, that map I posted was just a route I found on Google, but not being American myself I'm not too sure on the best places to visit, hence this thread, any advice of where to go etc is greatly appreciated.

Thanks user, any other places you suggest?

This made me laugh

LOL

And thanks for this user

Your trip looks like shit.
Now fuck off
No more advice for autists

I'd research a nice area and go visit it for a month or so instead of trying to do the whole country. Niggers try to avoid

Sound advice from this user.

Re: Walmart. They will let you stay overnight, but many stores will question you if you're there multiple days.

Another place to sleep in your car, highway rest stops.

Buy an atlas, don't rely on cell data for maps. Especially in the west, mountains do fuck with cell service and you may find yourself without data.

Laundromats, use them, or your car will get funky real quick

Damn, that's ambitious! Have you thought about buying a van? You could sleep in the back at highway rest areas and get a hotel room when you feel like getting comfy and talking a shower. Buy American, Chevy or Ford, etc. Easy to fix on your own or at a garage.

Satanic trips checked.
>This is Detroit.

Why not try walking it nigger.

first of all buy guns. you need at least 2-4 guns to drive across country.

>more Detroit. They wuz kangs n shit

St.louisfag here. When you're here, stay away from the north side and the east side. The delmar loop is good for food, the fox and grandel are the best for musicals. Tivoli and hi Pointe are good historic theaters. Zoo and science center are good free options. Best casino is ameristar but it's a hot minute away from the city, best ones close by is lumiere and river city. Stay away from 270 anytime near 7am and 3pm. Other notable spots are sculpture park, the grand basin in forest park, cathedral basilica and the old cathedral.

Thanks for your advice user. Didn't realise it was actually Walmart policy.

I'm going to have a look into states and national parks, another user mentioned these aswell.

>In the middle of nowhere US, you can pull onto a side road, drive for ten minutes, pull off into the bush, sleep in your car, and no one will find you.
Is this quite safe? Obviously some areas it's not lol but generally safe?

The map I posted was just a random route I found off Google, but I think I will be starting my own route from scratch, visiting some of the places mentioned on this thread.

Thx again.

>So I'm thinking of going travelling in America next year
don't. go somewhere exciting instead.

literally one of the stupidest places to PAY to visit

Trump got rid of cross country Amtrak. Google it.

you want to drive the PCH 1 up california. Definitely don't skip LA. You are spending way too much time in the middle of the country - it is complete shitsville and a waste of time of money.

how much time/money do you have?

If you see a wild Bill Cosby avoid it. Don't accept drinks or food from it. It will drug and rape you. I heard he'll have a driver give you a ride home though sometimes after he's done raping you

You wouldn't recommend the whole country?

Thanks user. Also good idea about Laundromats.

This was just a route I found from Google, to give an idea, but I think I may start planning my own trip from scratch and visit some places mentioned here.

WTF

?

Are you serious?

rest stops as and truck stops are bettet for car sleeping than walmart. Might wake up with a size 11 asshole at wally world.

Thanks for reply. Researching these places now

I just found this map from Google, but hoping to plan my own route using suggested places to visit here.

>how much time/money do you have?
Hopefully a year and a few thousand dollars.

>say this whole post with a stereotypical gay man accent
>and you're set

what are your interests? do you realize you are driving like 20,000 miles? Personally, depending on time of year, I'd do an east coast run ( nyc / boston / dc / maine or something ) ... shoot across the country, maybe hit florida / tenesee / texas / santa fe / grand canyon / LA to SF to Seattle.

But I like cool cities, no like.. the biggest ball of twine or whatever those shitstain fly over states have to offer.

Most people seem pretty confident about Walmart here.

Sleeping in the middle of nowhere is the most safe I have felt. Once you're in farmland, no one is coming out there at 2am to fuck with you. Worst you'll get (or worst I've got) is a farmer driving his tractor down a gravel road at 9am saying, "what are you doing here?" and you're like, "I just couldn't drive anymore." and he's like, "ah. okay. come round yonder if you want some breakfast." There's something to southern hospitality. Once you get out of the city.

Plus, the stars.

Motherfucker, have you seen the grandcanyon, Colorado, the tetons, or yosemite?

Don't you dare talk shit on the beauty of the US of A

Sleep in truck stops. Major chains all monitor the lots. Park in car part. Talk to a driver going in to get a shower. They get free showers when they fuel up. He can give you a free one they all offer the second person free shower for team drivers.

Before you travel in America, you must stop at the nearest convenience store and buy a pistol and a bible. It's the law.

Fuck off, most people in america are not christian and don't own guns.

Wtf going to ghetto ass nigger infested detroit but completely missing the upper peninsula. Whats wrong with you?

This guy is full of shit. Washington and Soulard are where things are popping. If you don’t like cops, stay away from the west side. If you don’t like blacks, skip Saint Louis completely.

The arch is a joke, go to our amazing free fucking zoo.

if you are talking about florida, I'd skip everything. Miami is interesting but better states to spend time in.

Bullshit. Americans roam their blasted wasteland, bible in one hand and pistol in the other, preaching creationism and shooting minorities. It is known.

Depends where you live.
I'd say 75% of the houses on my street own guns, and 90% christian.

Its just a typical suburban neighborhood, nothing special about it.

Like I said a few times in this thread, I found that off Google, and not being American myself I'm not sure on best places to visit, hence this thread.

I think your underestimating the cost of this op. Gas is like $2.75 a gallon average now and your trip is like 15000 miles. If a hurricane our something hits the price spikes. Also you need to pay to drive on some roads and bridges.

This will be useful for you in America OP.
