Does it count if both versions are perfect?
youtube.com
if someone posts covers by Johnny Cash i'll murder them
Came in the thread to say this.
the cash version IS better though
How's the wifi at Hot Topic?
This.
enough of the memes
The JD version is the best even if the sound guy fucked up. The lyrics were never meant to be sung with a poppy as voice as Sumner or as wispy as Thom. The lyrics and tone of the song was meant for Ian's echoey distant vocals and trying to mimic that isn't going to get very far.
not even the best cover by Type O

This is an argument you're going to lose, NIN's version is crap.
does Sup Forums generally like Gnarls Barkley/Cee Lo?
youtube.com
do love the original too
>dat shift into the Iron Man riff
Too sick. I need to listen to more TON.
I don't really like Ian's voice mainly
NIN's "version" isn't a version dumbass it's the actual song
its not a cover if its a featuring
NIN
>Trent's letter to himself after fighting with drugs, depression, alcoholism, understanding that there is a god and he hates us, feeling empty and useless.
Cash
>DUDE CASH IS SO OLD AND THIS SONG IS HIS LIFE! TIPPING MY FEDORA AT HIS GRAVE
and it sucks...
do explain how
But it's better though
this p much, as far as the songs meaning goes Trents portrayal of it is objectively better, but i guess for how it sounds to each individual is up to them. (Trents still being better lol)
Semantics, fucking sweet.
NIN
>melodramatic trash for teenagers like you to empathize with
Cash
>doesn't drag the song out for an extra 2.5 minutes just to amp up the cheese, tastefully replaces "crown of shit" with "crown of thorns," uses the unresolved dynamics of the piano keys to a more subtle effect where Reznor just shows off how epic his drum pad is, uses deadpan delivery perfectly w/r/t how the context changes
We can both play this game
>NIN
A great culmination of the emotions on the album in which the character/protagonist finally realizes how badly he's messed everything up
>Cash
Melodramatic old man wishing he did more with his life than write pop music on his geetar
but Trent wrote the song at the lowest point of his life thus far, he wrote it for himself as a vessel for what he was feeling at the time, he didn't write it just for the sake of a writing a song edgy teenagers could empathise with lol
>>melodramatic trash for teenagers like you to empathize with an old man for sake of "muh wrong generation"
Literally thats the cash version
Trent doesn't have a great voice and the emotional lyrics come off as hard to take seriously coming from him.
>>>Trent's letter to himself after fighting with drugs, depression, alcoholism, understanding that there is a god and he hates us, feeling empty and useless.
Here you describe the song in terms of the artist
>>DUDE CASH IS SO OLD AND THIS SONG IS HIS LIFE! TIPPING MY FEDORA AT HIS GRAVE
here you describe the song in terms of the audience
what utter bullshit
>what utter bullshit
just like cash
Some day you plebs will stop being a bunch of try hard shitters and realize that both Cash and Reznors versions are very good in their own way.
Someday you will finish highschool and hopefully you will kill yourself.
you are only saying this because mah RIP music video for the cover
This is Sup Forums, the most contrarian board on Sup Forums. Something like this isn't possible.
wow, this is great.
crazy i've never heard of this guy.
All this arguing and nobody talking about the true patrician NIN cover
how does crown of thorns relate to crown of shit? and are you afraid of the S word now?
Jokes on you I'll kill myself after finishing collage
>not realizing they had to change it to be radio friendly
kek, you and your cuck song
the lyrics manage to sound a lot more genuine when the band singing them isn't super far up its own asshole.
Most of the song was alright, till near the end when things got compleetely musical kino, holy shet
what's to dislike? ceelo and danger are great musicians
Fuck you
ooh hoo hoo
lol nah
never got the hype for that gnarls barkley cover t bh. the arrangement is super mediocre and cee-lo just caterwauls the entire time.
All of her covers are better than the originals
light-years better than Thom "constantly about to start crying" yorke.
I don't like John Mayer but this is fucking fantastic
falsetto = constantly about to start crying?
i can tell ur a real music expert lad
no, falsetto doesn't always equal that.
Thom's brand of it certainly does, he sounds whiny at best.
yet he also has far more control and diction than cee-lo. and even if he's "whiny" i still find that more subtle than flat-out wailing lol
and again, the instrumental in the original is far superior
Johnny Cash is legit amazing. Shame so many people only know him for a cover.

>radiohead
>subtle
oh ok, i knew were just fucking around
If your argument in favor of Thom is vocal control and diction than you have obviously never heard a Radiohead or Gnarls Barkley song in your life.
in this particular song, yes, thom's performance is more subtle than cee-lo's yowling. i don't see how that is such a crazy opinion.
again, the discussion is about this particular track. i'm not making a case for their entire discography. in this case cee-lo sounds like he's shouting random gibberish.
