Actually the Portuguese and the natives traded a lot. They were catequized by missionaires and saved by the teachings of the Church. Later on the natives started working in some plantations, and today many still exist. They are an important part of Brazilian culture and national identity, and very well respected.

There was great fear that the Church would not survive the reformation in Europe, so Spain and Portugal, two countries basically created by the Churh, started sending missionaires everywhere, even as far as Japan, to convert locals.

The technological and cultural gap was impossible to bridge for any of the colonies later established or the expanding United States. There were very clear boundaries and carefully negotiated mixed use areas at least in the eastern half of North America. There are still tree markers visible in the eastern woods that were shaped as boundary and road markers.
